Kalaiyarasan, a graduate in Computer Applications from SRM Institute of Science and Technology, embarked on his acting career with Parthy Bhaskar’s unreleased film “Arjunan Kadhali” in 2010. However, it was his association with director Myshkin on projects like “Nandalala” (2010) and “Mugamoodi” (2012) that proved to be pivotal, and he regards Myshkin as his mentor. Kalaiyarasan also played minor roles in director Ranjith’s debut film “Attakathi” (2012) and Vikram Sugumaran’s “Madha Yaanai Koottam” (2013).
The turning point in Kalaiyarasan’s acting career came when he portrayed the significant character of Anbu in Ranjith’s drama film “Madras” (2014). His audition process involved clearing three screen tests, and he worked closely with the lead actor, Karthi, to develop their on-screen chemistry. “Madras” was both a commercial and critical success upon its release in September 2014, and Kalaiyarasan’s performance received widespread acclaim. Critics hailed him as a dynamic performer, with Behindwoods.com noting that this role was a lifetime achievement for him. Sify.com praised his “riveting” performance, emphasizing his excellent body language and dialogue delivery in a parallel role.
After the success of “Madras,” Kalaiyarasan’s career in the Tamil film industry gained momentum, leading to roles in higher-profile films and even lead roles. He reunited with director Ranjith in the Rajinikanth-starrer “Kabali” (2016), where he played a vengeful school teacher. The film garnered positive reviews, particularly for Kalaiyarasan’s performance, and became the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time. Kalaiyarasan ventured into lead roles in films like “Darling 2” (2016) and “Raja Manthiri” (2016). His first prominent project as a protagonist was “Adhe Kangal” (2017), produced by C. V. Kumar, where he portrayed a blind chef inspired by American chef Christine Hà. The film received favorable reviews, with critics lauding Kalaiyarasan’s portrayal.
In addition to these accomplishments, Kalaiyarasan has several solo lead films set for release in 2017, including “Yeidhavan,” “China,” “Pattinapakkam,” and “Uru.” He will also appear in “Kaalakkoothu” alongside Prasanna and an untitled comedy film for C. V. Kumar alongside Ashna Zaveri. On a personal note, Kalaiyarasan met his spouse, Priya Shanker, while working at Accenture, his first job.
