Janardhana Maharshi, born on May 16, is a versatile Indian artist with a rich array of talents. He has made significant contributions to the fields of screenwriting, poetry, literature, film production, novel writing, lyricism, and film direction, primarily within the Telugu and Kannada cinema industries. Maharshi’s directorial works, specifically “Devasthanam” and “Viswadarshanam,” have garnered recognition at various film festivals.
Born in Kandukuru, Prakasham district, he completed his education in Chittoor. During his college years, he showcased his acting skills and wrote stage plays, while also publishing his poems and stories in renowned weekly publications. His journey in the film industry began as a Script Assistant under the guidance of Tanikella Bharani in 1989, a mentorship that lasted nearly a decade before he emerged as an independent writer in 1993.
Throughout his life, Janardhana Maharshi held a deep admiration for the legendary director K. Viswanath, considering him his idol. He fondly recalled how his mother would intricately explain the details of K. Viswanath’s films, shaping his profound reverence for the director.In 1995, he married Lakshmi Sunitha, and the couple has two daughters named Sravani Sarvamangala and Sarvani Saktipradatha.
They currently reside in Ameerpet, Hyderabad.Janardhana Maharshi made his breakthrough as a writer in 1994 and 1995 with four films, namely “One by Two,” “Aunty,” and “Pekata Papa Rao,” all of which enjoyed a successful 100-day run, establishing him as a popular storyteller, screenwriter, and dialogue writer.
His collaborations with directors T. S. B. K. Moulee and Siva Nageswara Rao catapulted him to fame.Later, he formed a dynamic partnership with the prolific director E. V. V. Satyanarayana, earning the reputation of being one of the most successful duos in the industry. Their creative synergy resulted in numerous hit films, and they continued collaborating on nearly 25 projects.
In 2004, Janardhana Maharshi ventured into the Kannada film industry and consistently delivered blockbuster films such as “Aakash,” “Arasu,” “Dattha,” “Meravanige,” and “Kannadadda Kiran Bedi.” His work extended to collaborations with directors K. Raghavendra Rao and S. V. Krishna Reddy, resulting in acclaimed films.
He also contributed dialogue writing to the National Award-winning film “Eega.” Among his notable films are “Venky Mama,” “Hungama,” “Eega,” “Maa Nannaku Pelli” (which won the Nandi Award for Best Family Picture), “Kanyadanam,” “Chala Bagundi,” “Goppinti Alludu,” “Bava Nachadu,” “Maavidaakulu,” “Jai Bolo Telangana,” “Pilla Nachindi,” “Maayajaalam” in Telugu, and “Natasaarvabhowma,” “Paramesha Panwala,” “Raj Vishnu,” “Bindaas,” and “Bombaat” in Kannada.
Janardhana Maharshi earned acclaim for his contributions to comedy films, including “Evadi Gola Vaadidhi,” “Pattukondi Chooddam,” “Maa Alludu Very Good,” “Sriramachandrulu,” “One by Two,” “Hungama,” “Once More,” “Pekata Papa Rao,” “Pavitra,” “Gopi – Goda Meeda Pilli,” and “Pellala Rajyam.”As a producer and director, he helmed the film “Devasthanam” featuring the legendary director K. Viswanath and singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam in 2013, earning numerous awards at film festivals.
In 2020, his biopic documentary on director K. Viswanath, titled “Viswadarshanam,” received accolades at film festivals and was widely praised. Both “Viswadarshanam” and “Devasthanam” were showcased at over 30 International Film Festivals. His work as a writer received acclaim for the film “Ammo! Okato Tareekhu.”Starting from 2004, Janardhana Maharshi expanded his creative repertoire to include poetry and short stories, resulting in the publication of seven books to date.
His book “Vennamudhalu” garnered immense attention and readership, going through 12 editions with the 13th on the way. He also authored “Garbhagudi Loki” (Novel), “Chidambara Rahasyam” (Story), “Panchaamrutham” (Short Stories), “Naaku Nenu Raasukunna Premalekha” (Prose), “Kavigaane Kanumustha” (Poetry), and “Madhura Sambhashanalu” (Conversations). Several of his books have been translated into other languages.
Janardhana Maharshi’s contributions to the world of cinema and literature continue to flourish, with two Telugu and one Kannada film in the pipeline for shooting in March and April. Currently, he is set to direct a film titled “Pibare Ramarasam,” a mythological drama based on the epic Ramayana.Additionally, Janardhana Maharshi showcased his acting talents in several films, including “Pattukondi Chooddam,” “Bhookailas,” “Bava Nachadu,” “Maa Aavida Meeda Ottu Mee Aavida Chala Manchidi,” “Jai Bolo Telangana,” and “O Panai Pothundi Babu.”
