Burt Lancaster

Biography:

Burt Lancaster was an award-winning American actor and producer who emerged as one of Hollywood’s leading actors in the 1940s and 1950s. Burt Lancaster was born on November 2, 1913, in New York City. Before entering the acting world, he served as an acrobat and circus performer. He took part in the U.S. Army during the Second World War. He acted for the first time in The Killers in 1946 and immediately became a charismatic leading man. He starred in several films like Brute Force (1947), The Crimson Pirate (1952), From Here to Eternity (1953), Sweet Smell of Success (1957) and Elmer Gantry (1960).

Burt Lancaster won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as the charismatic religious fraud Elmer Gantry in the film Elmer Gantry in 1960. He earned Oscar nominations from From Here to Eternity, Birdman of Alcatraz in 1962 and Atlantic City in 1980. As a producer, he was known for producing ambitious and socially relevant films like Marty in 1955. Some of his other movies include The Professionals in 1966, The Leopard in 1963, Judgment at Nuremberg in 1961 and Field of Dreams in 1989. Lancaster continued his career in film industry till the beginning of 1990s and passed away on October 20, 1994, in Los Angeles, California.
