Kennedy John Victor, popularly known by his stage name Vikram or Chiyaan Vikram, is a highly acclaimed Indian actor primarily working in the Tamil film industry. He has achieved numerous accolades, including seven Filmfare Awards South, a National Film Award, and a Tamil Nadu State Film Award. Vikram has also been honored with the Kalaimamani Award by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2004 and an honorary doctorate from the Popular University of Milan in May 2011. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the first Indian actor to receive a doctorate from a European University in the field of acting.
Vikram’s career began with the romantic film “En Kadhal Kanmani” in 1990, but he gained major recognition for his role as a rogue-turned-lover in Bala’s tragic masterpiece “Sethu” in 1999. He has since starred in several successful films, including “Dhill” (2001), “Gemini” (2002), “Dhool” (2003), “Saamy” (2003), “Anniyan” (2005), “Raavanan” (2010), “Deiva Thirumagal” (2011), and “Iru Mugan” (2017). Vikram’s versatility as an actor is evident in his critically acclaimed performances as disadvantaged individuals in movies like “Kasi” (2001), “Samurai” (2002), and “Pithamagan” (2003), the last of which earned him a National Film Award for Best Actor.
Vikram’s career also boasts high-grossing releases, including the romantic thriller “I” (2015) and the epic historical dramas “Ponniyin Selvan: I” (2022) and “Ponniyin Selvan: II” (2023).
Beyond his acting career, Vikram has actively supported various social causes. He served as the Youth Envoy for the United Nations Human Settlements Programme in 2011, promoted the Sanjeevani Trust and Vidya Sudha, a school for special children, and maintained long-term partnerships with Kasi Eye Care. He established the Vikram Foundation and directed the flood relief anthem “Spirit of Chennai” in 2016, paying tribute to the volunteers who assisted during the 2015 South Indian floods. His influence extends beyond cinema, making him a prominent figure in both the entertainment industry and social activism.
