Biography:

Teja, an Indian filmmaker and screenwriter who was born on February 22, 1966, in an affluent family in Madras, Tamil Nadu (now Chennai). J.B.K. Chowdhary, his father, was a Japanese industrialist and exporter with his main office in Tokyo. Due to Chowdhary’s significant business losses, Teja was compelled to begin working at a young age.

Teja describes himself as being against religion, caste, and region. For the same reason, he legally opted not to use his last name is best known for his work in Telugu cinema. With hits like Chitram, Nuvvu Nenu, and Jayam, he took a bold step. He has won multiple state Nandi Awards and the Filmfare Award for Telugu’s Best Director, for the film Nuvvu Nenu.

Teja won the Nandi Award for Best Cinematography for his work on Ram Gopal Varma’s 1992 bilingual film Raat, which marked his feature film debut. His credits as a cinematographer include Tere Mere Sapne, Money, Baazi, Ghulam, Sangharsh, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hain, Krodh, Krishna, Shastra, Rakshak, and Vishwavidhaata.

Teja also contributed to the crews of movies including Govinda Govinda, Antham, Rangeela, Drohi, Govinda Kshanam, and Gaayam.

Teja, who took any job he could find, eventually found himself working as a lighting assistant on Tamil movie sets. He began his career in the lighting and sound departments before moving to the camera department to work under W.B. Rao and Ravikant Nagaich. After that, he started working on documentaries for the National Geographic Channel. After that, he jumped on the Bollywood bandwagon.

Teja, a cinematographer, would often arrange for Hindi film shoots to take place in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, so that he could spend more time with his son and wife. There were a lot of schedules in Ramoji Film City. With a forty lakh rupee budget, Chitram, Teja’s directorial debut, was entirely planned in Ramoji Film City.

The movie was a big hit and opened the door for many other new age romantic movies in Tollywood. Following the release of Nuvvu Nenu, the highest grossing film of that year and an all time blockbuster, Teja became well known. The movie ran for three hundred and fifty five days and won six Nandi Awards. The movie was also remade in Hindi, starring Anita Hassanandani and Tushar Kapoor.

In 2003, Teja’s next movie, Nijam, with Mahesh Babu and Rakshitha in the lead roles, was released. Despite earning little money at the box office, Nijam received positive reviews. The next year, Teja created Jai. In the movie, actor Navdeep made his feature debut alongside Santhoshini and Ayesha Jhulka. In Tamil, it was called Jairam. The movie’s run in both languages was mediocre.

Later, Teja simultaneously directed Avunanna Kaadanna and Dhairyam. Teja abandoned Dhairyam’s filming halfway through, claiming that the film’s producer N. Sudhakar Reddy, Nithiin’s father had altered and recut a scene without getting his permission. After receiving his money back, Teja called a press conference and said he had nothing to do with the movie. Avunanna Kadanna was deemed a hit after a seventy-five-day run, while Dhairyam was a box office failure.

Teja also established distribution centers for Chitram movies in Vizag and Hyderabad. In Nizam and other districts, he distributed movies like The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and many more.
