Biography:

Shine Tom Chacko, born on September 15, 1983, is an Indian actor and former assistant director active in the Malayalam film industry. Following a nearly nine-year stint as an assistant under director Kamal, he ventured into acting with the film “Gaddama.” He assumed supporting roles in various movies, including “Ee Adutha Kaalathu,” “Chapters,” “Annayum Rasoolum,” and “Masala Republic.” His first leading role came in Binu S Kalady’s fantasy-comedy “Ithihasa” (2014), a film centered around body-swapping.

Shine’s career began as an assistant director to Kamal in the early 2000s. He completed his B.Com degree from St. Thomas College, Thrissur. During his approximately ten-year collaboration with Kamal, Shine even appeared in a scene in the 2002 film “Nammal,” directed by Kamal. His acting journey commenced in 2011 with Kamal’s “Gaddama,” where he portrayed an immigrant subjected to torment and slavery in the deserts of Saudi Arabia. Notably, he played a significant role in Sunil Ibrahim’s “Chapters” (2012), although the film did not perform well at the box office.

Despite playing secondary and minor roles in films like “Annayum Rasoolum” (2013) and “Ee Adutha Kaalathu” (2012), Shine gained breakthrough recognition through the 2014 fantasy comedy “Ithihasa,” directed by Binu Sadanandan. He starred in the lead role, a character-swapping theme that contributed to its position as one of the top-grossing Malayalam films of 2014. His portrayal of a strong negative character in “Kammatipaadam” (2016) received praise, and he also played notable roles in “Annmariya Kalippilaanu” the same year. Shine took on lead roles as Antony in “Dum” and Kinder in “Popcorn,” both released in 2016, though neither performed well at the box office.

In 2017, Shine secured significant roles in movies such as “Godha,” “Tiyaan,” “Varnyathil Aashanka,” “Parava,” and “Mayanadhi.” He also led in “Who” (2018), the first Malayalam movie centered on time travel, and “Ottakkoru Kamukan” the same year, which received mixed reviews.

Shine’s villainous performance in “Ishq” (2019) earned critical acclaim, even as the movie garnered negative reviews overall. His portrayal of Alwin, a moral enforcer intruding on a couple’s privacy, was lauded as one of the decade’s most detestable villainous roles in Malayalam cinema by The Hindu. He took the lead in the fantasy comedy “Mask,” which similarly explored body-swapping. His role in Khalid Rahman’s dark comedy “Unda” (2019) was also praised, with some critics listing it among the best Malayalam films of the decade.

In 2020, Shine played significant roles in “Bhoomiyile Manohara Swakaryam” and “Maniyarayile Ashokan.” He also starred in Khalid Rahman’s thriller “Love,” which garnered mixed reviews and had a delayed release in India on January 29, 2021. In 2021, his roles as a police officer in “Operation Java” and “Wolf” earned critical acclaim. He also played a significant part in “Anugraheethan Antony.” Notably, he received praise for his performance in the OTT release “Kuruthi” and the film “Kurup” (2021).

In 2022, he featured in well-received films like “Veyil,” “Bheeshma Parvam,” and “Pada.” Shine marked his Tamil debut with “Beast,” an action drama starring Vijay and Pooja Hegde. Additionally, he is set to make his Telugu debut with “Dasara,” an action drama starring Nani and Keerthy Suresh in lead roles.
