Vijay Sethupathi’s 51st film Ace marks Kannada actress Rukmini Vasanth’s Tamil debut. Directed by Arumuga Kumar, the film was released in Telugu by D. Shivaprasad. With good pre-release buzz, let’s see how well it lived up to the hype.
ACE Movie Story: Bolt Kannan (played by Vijay Sethupathi) comes to Malaysia in search of work. With the help of Gnanam (Yogi Babu), he does small jobs to pass the time. He finds out that his neighbor Rukmini (Rukmini Vasanth) is facing financial problems and decides to commit a theft to help her.
What was Kannan’s past? How did he plan and execute the theft? What problems did he face because of it? How did he solve them? The movie Ace answers all these questions.
Performances: Vijay Sethupathi seemed dull in this film, lacking his usual charm except in songs. The action scenes felt forced. Rukmini Vasanth looked good but had no strong character arc, making her role forgettable.
Divya Pillai’s presence also felt unnecessary. However, Yogi Babu brought solid comedy after a long time, and the Telugu dialogues stood out well, credit to the writers. Bablu Prithiveeraj and B.S. Avinash handled their roles effectively, adding some weight to the supporting cast.
Technical Aspects: Justin Prabhakaran‘s music is the highlight of Ace, especially the first song featuring Vijay Sethupathi and Rukmini Vasanth, with cute chemistry. Background score is decent. Cinematography is average, with overuse of drone shots. Editing feels rushed with awkward jump cuts.
However, the Telugu dubbed version by Sri Padmini Cinemas is neatly executed, with good care in titles and dialogues. Director Arumuga Kumar presents a simple story, but weak screenplay clarity and character decisions hold it back. Overall, the film ends up just average.
Analysis: Ace lacks strong thrills, but Vijay Sethupathi and Yogi Babu’s comedy, Rukmini Vasanth’s presence, and Justin Prabhakaran’s music make it an average watch.
Verdict: Ace falls short on excitement and thrills but is saved by good comedy, strong performances, and catchy music. It’s an average movie worth a watch if you enjoy light entertainment.
Bottom Line: Strong performances, but lacks excitement.
