Makutam Movie Review & Rating!

Vishal makes his directorial debut with Makutam. The film’s teaser and trailers failed to create much buzz, and his look reminded many of Mark Antony. Despite the low expectations, the film got a grand release in the Telugu states for Independence Day. Now, let’s see whether Makutam gives Vishal a successful start as a director.

Makutam Story: Krupakar, a medical representative, struggles financially while supporting his wife and two children. After buying a second-hand car, his family is attacked by goons during an outing, leaving his wife and daughter dead. Krupakar kills the attackers while protecting his son. The story then reveals the mystery behind the attack, Krupakar’s connection with gangster Linga, and Naga’s betrayal of Linga’s family.

Performances: Vishal does a decent job as Krupakar, but his gangster look does not suit. His performance in Anjali’s death scene also feels exaggerated. Anjali’s acting is over the top, while Dushara Vijayan does well. John Vijay and Ravi Prakash are decent. Jhansi’s role feels unnecessary, and the other actors do not leave much impact.

Technical Aspects: Makutam offers a familiar story with shades of many earlier films. The second-hand car sentiment is an interesting idea, but the screenplay fails to make it engaging. The opening comedy scenes are irritating, while the film lacks strong high moments.

The forest fight and pre-climax action sequence work well. Cinematography, music and production values are good. However, the three-hour-plus runtime becomes a major drawback.

Analysis: Makutam does not offer anything new in terms of its story or screenplay. The second half feels more suitable for a web series than a theatrical film. With its lengthy runtime and predictable narration, the film may struggle to hold the audience’s attention in theatres.

Verdict: Makutam has a familiar story and weak screenplay. Good action and technical work offer some relief, but the slow narration and long runtime make it difficult to enjoy.

Bottom Line: The film struggles as a theatrical experience.
