The Tamil film Mandaadi, starring Kollywood comedian Soori and Tollywood actor Suhas in the lead roles, has been released in Telugu with the same title. Produced by acclaimed filmmaker Vetrimaaran, the film generated good interest among Telugu audiences through its teaser and trailer.

The movie is directed by Mathimaran, while Mahima Nambiar plays the female lead. Released in theaters on Thursday, did Mandaadi manage to impress the Telugu audience? Let’s find out.

Story: Sattapuli (Suhas) dominates the boat racing scene in Kalingapatnam. When Mallesham (Mithun Jaishankar) challenges him with a new team, Kali (Soori), Sattapuli’s former friend, steps in to help. Years ago, the two were close companions trained by Munayya (Sathyaraj), and Kali was in love with Munayya’s daughter Angel (Mahima Nambiar).

A betrayal changes their lives forever, forcing Kali to leave his village and his love behind. Years later, he returns to challenge Sattapuli’s supremacy. What caused their fallout, and can Kali finally set things right? The rest of the story provides the answers.

Performances: Soori delivers a solid performance in the mass role of Kali. His body language and mannerisms suit the character of a fisherman perfectly. Suhas plays the antagonist and performs convincingly. The variations he showcases in two different looks are impressive. Mahima Nambiar delivers a natural performance and fits her role well.

Sathyaraj appears in a key role as the mentor figure and performs effectively. Ravindra Vijay also leaves a decent impression. Apart from these actors, most of the cast may not be familiar to Telugu audiences. Mithun Jaishankar delivers a satisfactory performance in his role.

Technical Aspects: Technically, G.V. Prakash Kumar’s music and S.R. Kathir’s cinematography are among the film’s strengths. Kathir captures the coastal atmosphere and racing sequences beautifully, lending authenticity to the proceedings. G.V. Prakash’s background score complements the emotional and action-packed moments effectively. The producers deserve appreciation for backing the director’s vision and mounting the film on a decent scale.

Director Mathimaran Pugalendi chooses the unique backdrop of boat racing competitions, which gives the film a fresh setting. While the concept feels new, the drama surrounding it remains somewhat routine. The screenplay struggles at times to keep the narrative consistently engaging despite a few twists and turns.

Analysis: Sports dramas in South Indian cinema generally revolve around cricket or kabaddi. In contrast, Mandaadi explores the lesser-known world of boat racing, making it a sincere and refreshing attempt. Director Mathimaran blends a failed love story with a revenge drama to drive the narrative. The character of Suhas is written well and adds strength to the conflict.

The first half successfully builds curiosity. Questions such as why Kali left Kalingapatnam, why Angel distanced herself from him, and what exactly happened between Kali and Sattapuli keep the audience engaged. The second half focuses on revealing these answers.

However, the flashback portions could have been more gripping. The central conflict involving betrayal and exile feels familiar, as similar themes have been explored in many Telugu and Tamil films before. As a result, some portions feel predictable.

The boat racing sequences are undoubtedly the highlight of the film. They offer a unique big-screen experience, especially during the climax and the whirlpool episode, which are executed effectively. At the same time, the hero overcoming a series of familiar obstacles before achieving victory follows a well-worn formula.

The Telugu dubbing and localization could have been better. Even the names printed on the jerseys and certain visual elements remain rooted in the Tamil version. A better adaptation for Telugu audiences would have enhanced the overall viewing experience.

Verdict: Overall, Mandaadi stands out for its unique sports backdrop, strong performances by Soori and Suhas, and impressive boat racing sequences. While the emotional drama and screenplay occasionally feel familiar, the film does not offer anything new for the Telugu audience.

Bottom Line: Nothing new

Rating: 2/5
