Toxic Movie Review & Rating!

Yash’s new film, Toxic, arrived with huge expectations across multiple industries. Directed by Geetu Mohandas, Toxic features Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Tara Sutaria, Rukmini Vasanth, and Huma Qureshi in key roles. Produced by Venkat K. Narayana under KVN Productions, the film was released in Telugu by Dil Raju. So, does Toxic live up to the massive expectations surrounding Yash’s comeback? Let’s find out.

Toxic Story:

Salvador is the powerful kingmaker of Goa, ruling a vast empire. His brother Fernandez tries to challenge him but meets a tragic end. Fernandez’s daughter Rebecca (Tara Sutaria) is married to Raya (Yash), who becomes closely involved in Salvador’s world. Raya’s life changes when Nadia (Kiara Advani) enters it. He falls in love with her, but their relationship takes a dark turn after a series of events leads to Ganga’s(Nayanthara) death.

When Raya discovers Nadia’s role in it, their relationship falls apart. Meanwhile, Melissa (Rukmini Vasanth) enters Raya’s troubled life, while a mysterious man named Rumi emerges with an agenda against the Ray empire. Who is Rumi? What connects him to Raya? And what drives him to challenge the powerful empire? The answers form the crux of the story.

Performances: Yash is easily the biggest strength of Toxic. He carries the film with his powerful screen presence, attitude, body language, and intense performance. He handles both Raya and Rumi with confidence and brings noticeable variations to the two characters. His action scenes are particularly effective, while several of his dialogue moments are designed purely for fans. The climax allows Yash to go all out, and he delivers with full conviction.

Nayanthara plays Yash’s sister and gets an action-oriented character. She performs well in the intense portions, although the writing does not give her enough emotional depth. Kiara Advani gets one of the better-written female roles. She brings sincerity to the character and performs the emotional scenes well. Her chemistry with Yash works in parts, especially in the romantic portions.

Tara Sutaria looks glamorous but has limited scope to perform. Rukmini Vasanth has a pleasant screen presence and makes an impression whenever she appears, but her character is not developed enough. Huma Qureshi, despite her ability as a performer, is also underutilized in a negative role.

Technical Aspects: The technical departments are among the stronger aspects of Toxic. Cinematographer Rajeev Ravi gives the film a rich and stylish visual identity. The Goa portions and snowy landscapes are beautifully captured, while the action blocks are mounted on a grand scale.

Ravi Basrur’s background score works effectively in several key sequences and helps elevate Yash’s character during the major action and mass moments. However, the songs do not make a strong impact and are largely forgettable.

The production values are excellent. Venkat K. Narayana and KVN Productions have invested heavily in presenting the film on a large scale, particularly in the action sequences. The Hollywood-style production quality is clearly visible in several portions.

The biggest technical drawback is the editing. The Telugu version runs for around three hours and 14 minutes, which is far too long for the material. At least 25–30 minutes could have been trimmed to make the film tighter and more engaging.

Analysis: The biggest problem with Toxic is that it has plenty of style but not enough emotional substance. Geetu Mohandas attempts to tell the story of a gangster whose life is shaped by several women, family relationships, love, betrayal, and violence. On paper, this offers plenty of scope for an emotionally rich gangster drama.

Unfortunately, the screenplay focuses more on action, violence, visual presentation, and Yash’s star image than on developing the emotional core. The film also carries a strong KGF hangover. Yash’s styling, body language, characterization, and elevation moments frequently remind audiences of Rocky Bhai.

The first half is packed with action and multiple characters, but the central conflict is not established strongly enough. The brother-sister track, Yash-Nayanthara relationship, Yash-Kiara romance, Tara Sutaria’s track, and Huma Qureshi’s character are all introduced, making the narrative feel overcrowded.

The second half does little to solve these problems. Instead, more characters and twists are added. The Rukmini Vasanth track and some of the exaggerated action sequences feel unnecessarily over-the-top. The psychological angle introduced toward the end is an interesting idea, but it arrives after a largely chaotic narrative and fails to deliver the desired impact.

There are some good ideas in Toxic, and the Raya-Rumi connection and final twist have potential. But the film needed much stronger writing and emotional depth. Had the director focused more on the characters and less on Yash’s established star image, Toxic could have been a much more effective gangster drama.

Verdict: Overall, Toxic is a visually lavish gangster drama that relies heavily on Yash’s star power but struggles with its lengthy runtime, uneven screenplay, excessive violence, and lack of emotional depth. Yash is impressive, but the film ultimately offers more style than substance and ends as a massive disappointment.

Bottom Line: A big mess
