Theatre“Takkari Donga,” translated as “The Sly Thief,” is a 2002 Indian Telugu-language reimagining of the western genre film, produced, written, and directed by Jayant Paranjee. The movie featured Mahesh Babu, Lisa Ray, Bipasha Basu, and Rahul Dev in significant roles. It was entirely shot in the United States. Upon its release, “Takkari Donga” received a mixed reception, although it did win five state Nandi Awards, including Best Audiography, Best Cinematography, and Best Action.
The story kicks off with the notorious outlaw Shaka eliminating his own older brother to extract information concerning the diamond valley. This information is also sought by rancher Veeru Dada. During their confrontation, Veeru leaps into a river from a cliff. Eighteen years later, in Gajner, Rajasthan, we find Veeru, now with a missing leg, sharing valuable insights with Raja, a playful yet formidable bandit known for his stylish bank heists.
Raja compensates Veeru with a 50% share of the loot for his tips. As the bounty on Raja’s head escalates, he becomes bolder in his exploits. Another cunning thief, Panasa, and her uncle trail Raja with the intention of deceiving him and absconding with the stolen money. While Panasa and Raja engage in a playful rivalry, Shaka intensifies his search for Veeru, who anticipates an imminent threat to his life.
To safeguard his daughter Bhuvana, Veeru offers Raja a large diamond in exchange for transporting her to his brother Dharma’s location via a perilous route. During their journey, romantic sparks fly, and love blossoms between Raja and Bhuvana. Raja is haunted by a mysterious house they encounter, which he reveals to be his childhood home where his father and sister were murdered by an unidentified masked assailant, driving him to a life of thievery in pursuit of vengeance.
When Bhuvana inquires about how he intends to identify the killer, Raja discloses the telltale scar on the killer’s hand that would be his identifier. Upon their arrival at Dharma’s place, Dharma is assassinated. Raja heads to a nearby shop to make funeral arrangements for Dharma, unknowingly encountering Shaka disguised as the shopkeeper.
When Shaka realizes that Bhuvana possesses a crucial map, he tries to forcibly take it, revealing that he had killed Bhuvana’s father, Dharma, for that very map, which leads to the diamond valley. A scuffle ensues, during which the map is accidentally destroyed. Subsequently, Shaka binds Raja to a tree and kidnaps Bhuvana, as she is the sole person who knows the route to the concealed diamond treasury.
Raja manages to free himself and confronts Shaka. A fierce battle unfolds, during which Shaka discloses that he knows the identity of Raja’s father’s killer but will only reveal it if Raja assists him in navigating the treacherous terrain to reach the diamond valley and unearth the hidden treasure. Reluctantly, Raja agrees.
With Raja’s guidance, Shaka ultimately discovers the path to the hidden treasure. However, as Shaka retrieves the diamonds, Raja notices the distinctive scar on Shaka’s hand, leading him to realize that Shaka is the very person who had murdered his father and sister. In the climactic showdown, Raja vanquishes Shaka and reunites with Bhuvana.
