Sye

Story:

Sye is a 2004 Telugu sports action film directed by S. S. Rajamouli, based on a story by V. Vijayendra Prasad. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of rugby union, featuring Nithin and Genelia D’Souza in lead roles, supported by Shashank and Pradeep Rawat.

The film revolves around the rivalry between two college factions—Science led by Prudhvi and Arts led by Shashank competing for dominance through the sport of rugby. However, their unity is tested when a local gangster, Bhikshu Yadav, seizes control of their college.

Marking Rajamouli’s third directorial venture after the successes of “Student No.1” and “Simhadri,” the film boasts a musical score by M. M. Keeravani, cinematography by K. K. Senthil Kumar, and editing by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao.

The storyline took inspiration from college rivalries and sportsmanship, leading to a loose Bengali remake titled “Jor Jar Muluk Tar” (2010) and an unofficial Kannada adaptation titled “Guru Shishyaru” (2022). The latter, featuring Sharan, retained 65% of the original story, replacing rugby with kho-kho and shifting the focus to saving a village from a villain claiming ownership of the land.

The film introduces Prudhvi (Nithiin) and Shashank (Shashank) as leaders of opposing student groups in a Hyderabad college. Fond of rugby, they resolve disputes through the sport to assert their dominance.

The plot takes a dramatic turn when local mafia leader Bhikshu Yadav (Pradeep Rawat) legally acquires the college land. Prudhvi and Shashank’s groups unite, overcoming differences, to reclaim their college.

To tarnish Bhikshu’s political image, the students stage protests, posting fake posters and simulating deaths due to spurious liquor from his shops. Responding to the student challenges, Bhikshu proposes a rugby union game to decide the fate of the college land.

The remainder of the story unfolds as Prudhvi leads his team in a determined effort to emerge victorious and reclaim their college grounds.
