Saving Private Ryan

Story:

Saving Private Ryan is an American epic war movie that was made in 1998. It was directed by Steven Spielberg and scripted by Robert Rodat. It takes place in World War II. The film opens with the Allied invasion of Normandy that occurred on June 6, 1944, then follows a story of a squad of U.S. soldiers commanded by Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks). The task that the group of soldiers is assigned to complete is extremely difficult. They should find Private First Class James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon) who is a paratrooper and whose three brothers were killed in action, take him into custody and bring him back to safety.

As Miller and his squad are searching for Ryan, the film reflects such features of war as fear, tiredness, sorrow, loyalty and moral burden of saving one man and losing several people in order to do it. The soldiers start creating a strong team in a series of ambushes, fights and deaths and start thinking about the value of their task and its importance. The movie is famous for its realistic depiction of war, especially of such part of it as the Normandy landings in the very beginning of the movie, as well as for direction, sound design and performances. Saving Private Ryan got 11 Oscar nominations and five wins, including the nomination of Best Director for Steven Spielberg.
