Theatre“Priyamaanavale,” a 2000 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama directed by K. Selva Bharathy, tells the story of Vijay, a wealthy and Westernized young man who agrees to marry under the condition that the marriage is valid for only one year, after which he can decide whether to continue it. His decision concerns his father, who wants him to become more responsible and settle down. Priya, Vijay’s personal assistant, accepts his proposal despite the unconventional terms because she is the sole provider for her family, including an ailing sister, a younger sister in need of marriage, and an unemployed brother.
After marrying Vijay, Priya hopes to change him and make him more responsible. Despite initially considering her a friend rather than a wife, Vijay eventually agrees to work in his father’s office, where he uncovers financial misconduct by his employees, including his associate Manohar and Priya’s crude uncle, 7 Times. Vijay’s decision to end the marriage on their first anniversary deeply hurts Priya, who has endured public humiliation for agreeing to an “agreement” marriage.
However, a transformative incident involving a beggar caring for his paralyzed wife makes Vijay realize his mistakes, prompting him to seek forgiveness from Priya. Despite his efforts to reconcile, Priya remains resentful. The situation escalates when Priya reveals their marital issues during a Seemantham function, publicly humiliating Vijay. The couple’s relationship deteriorates further, but when Vijay is stabbed by his former employees, Priya rushes to his aid, and she goes into labor. Despite the initial misunderstanding, they reconcile after the birth of their child, with both families sharing in the joy and agreeing to care for the baby cooperatively.
In summary, “Priyamaanavale” is a Tamil romantic drama that explores themes of love, responsibility, and cultural values.
