Muthu is a Tamil movie released in 1995. Muthu, a devoted servant to a wealthy zamindar (Sarathbabu), finds himself falling in love with a captivating drama artiste, Ranganayagi (Meena). The zamindar, unaware of their budding affection, also harbors feelings for Ranganayagi. Driven by his cunning uncle (Radharavi), who seeks to marry his daughter to the zamindar, Muthu is falsely accused and banished. However, his mother reveals a shocking truth: Muthu is the true heir to the zamindari, born with a different identity to ensure his safety. Inspired by the Malayalam film “Thenmaavin Kombathu,” “Muthu” adds a twist with Rajinikanth pulling off a double role, delivering his signature philosophical dialogues and fulfilling fan expectations.
Most of the comedy will be see in the first half. Enough political lines are scattered throughout the movie to keep the Rajnikanth fan delirious and applauding.
Muthu shines with Rajinikanth’s dual performance, the heartwarming older zamindar and the playful Muthu. The comedic love letter sequence and the catchy “Thillaanaa…” song stand out. However, the ending rushes, Sarathbabu’s return feels forced, and supporting characters lack depth. Nevertheless, Rajinikanth carries the film, Meena charms, and A.R. Rahman’s music adds to the experience. “Oruvan Oruvan…” and “Kuluvaalile…” are highlights, with “Thillaanaa…” captivating with its vibrant visuals and pace.
