Aparshakti Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi, Vinay Pathak, and Alka Amin play supporting parts in the movie, which stars Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon. A television reporter and his feisty intern live together in Mathura, and when their traditional families believe they are married, mayhem results. The movie received favorable reviews when it was released on March 1, 2019. At the box office, it became a huge financial success, making ₹128.60 crore (US$15 million) globally.
Seeing live-in relationships as a disgrace to Indian conservative culture, Vishnu Trivedi, a failing politician from the small town of Mathura, advocates for their outlawing. Simultaneously, his party launches a full-scale campaign against movie star Nazeem Khan, who is purportedly living with his girlfriend—exactly the reason he is against live-in relationships. Rashmi, Vishnu’s daughter, interns at a local news station where she works with Vinod “Guddu” Shukla, the station’s top reporter, and his best buddy, cameraman Abbas Sheikh.
After falling in love, Guddu pops the question to Rashmi. She recommends a live-in relationship because she is not ready for marriage, but he opposes because he is more conventional and a little afraid of Vishnu. During their 20-day business trip to Gwalior, Abbas proposes attempting a live-in arrangement as a compromise. The pair is in agreement. They pose as a married couple and rent an apartment in a conservative neighborhood. They eventually become closer and consummate their union. When Mrs. Srivastava, their nosy neighbor, witnesses them engaging in one of these behaviors, she starts to wonder if they are married. When questioned about their wedding date, they give conflicting responses, which makes things much more difficult. Overnight, Guddu and Rashmi create phony photos and wedding souvenirs, upending her intentions to rally the neighborhood to evict the newlyweds the next morning.
Twenty days later, he declares his love once more, and she agrees to marry him. Babulal, a relative of Guddu, sees the couple together before they can leave Gwalior, follows them, looks at the wedding photos, and believes they eloped. When Guddu’s whole family arrives at Babulal’s residence the following morning, they reprimand him for eloping. Guddu and Rashmi refuse to acknowledge the truth since they know that the family would be open to a marriage but not a cohabitation. To meet Rashmi’s family and share the news, they all return to Mathura. On the other hand, Vishnu is pleased to learn that his daughter chose marriage over cohabitation. If they had lived together instead, he even describes the lethal repercussions. Fearful, the pair refuses to acknowledge the reality.
They dislike the fact that they are not legally married, even though they start living like a married couple. They try several times to get married in secret but are always interrupted; as a last resort, they try to get married at a public wedding ceremony. Being the main visitor, Vishnu, however, exposes them. They acknowledge that they had been living together in frustration.
When his family also catches up, Guddu tells Vishnu that his resistance to change is the primary cause of his electoral defeats; since the younger generation makes up the majority of the voting population and is modernist, criticizing the youth’s strategies would be interpreted as a lack of support from them. He finally marries Rashmi with Vishnu’s approval after persuading him to quit opposing live-in couples. The narrative concludes with Guddu and Rashmi reporting on a rally headed by Vishnu, who is revealed to have teamed up with Nazeem for his campaign.
