Plot
The Rama Navami celebration serves as the backdrop for the movie. Returned from the Gulf, Bhujanga is a well-liked businessman in his hometown. Bhujanga made an investment in a small commercial property close to his home, which he has leased to the store owners. All of his shops are currently open, with the exception of one. He has a short fuse, doesn’t want his daughter to pursue higher education, and only wants her to get married. When his daughter is jailed for putting on a protest, he becomes even more enraged. In the meantime, he meets his buddies every evening in the abandoned store, where they become close over a few drinks.
When Bhujanga sees Susheela, a prostitute, he wants to be close to her, but he gets worried because he thinks her reputation would be damaged. On one such evening, Shiva, an autorickshaw driver and Rajeeva’s buddy, puts the prostitute into the empty shop and locks her and Bhujanga inside, promising to open the shutter once they have spent some time together.
Shiva encounters a film director who was among his passengers that morning and had left his bag in Shiva’s autorickshaw. Shiva informed him that although he had left the bag behind the locked store shutter, he had seen it and would return to retrieve it. When the director finds out that Shiva will get his bag back, he celebrates by offering him a few drinks. But, both end up in trouble with the law for driving while intoxicated, and they don’t come back that night to open the shutter as promised to Bhujanga.
Since the director is good friends with Inspector Ramdas, they are both freed in the morning. But owing to unforeseen reasons, Shiva was unable to come and unlock the shutter that evening as well. In this manner, Bhujanga and Susheela are compelled to stay together for a few nights inside the locked shutter while they wait for Shiva to return to open it.
Bhujanga, who is trapped behind the shutter, learns many lessons about the true nature of individuals he had previously regarded as friends and foes by what he hears from the outside, and as a result, his perspective on many aspects of life is altered. As he comes to understand Susheela is a good soul after all, his initial distaste at her seeming lack of etiquette also gradually fades.
Finally, the shutter is unlocked, allowing them to both emerge from it. However, they are clueless as to who opened the shutter and do not see anyone nearby. Bewildered, Bhujanga enters a house and discovers from his daughter that her friend unlocked the door. She implies that she is well-informed but has kept it a secret from others, and she has faith in her father’s goodness no matter what.
This, together with his experiences behind the shutter, affect Bhujanga, who chooses to keep his daughter’s marriage pending so she can finish her education. Susheela had previously discovered the script inside the bag inside the shutter, therefore it appears that the Director returned the script to her (without making it clear how the two are related). However, he chooses to document her incidents that took place in the shutter for a movie.
