Joy Mathew is an Indian actor, director, playwright, and screenwriter, primarily working in Malayalam cinema and theatre.
He gained recognition for his lead role in John Abraham’s 1986 film Amma Ariyan, which was acclaimed by the British Film Institute as one of the Top 10 Indian films. In 2012, he made his directorial debut with the film Shutter, which depicts unexpected events occurring over two days and a night in the city of Kozhikode. Shutter premiered at the 17th International Film Festival of Kerala and later at the 9th Dubai International Film Festival, winning the Silver Crow Pheasant Award for Best Feature Film (Audience Prize) at the former.
Joy Mathew is also a prolific playwright, having written over 22 plays in Malayalam, including Madhyadharanyazhi, Veeedukal Kathunnu, Athirthikkal, Sankadal, Pretoria – 18 Oct, and Chille 73. He received the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award for his play Sankadal in 1996. Additionally, he has been honored by the Kerala Sahitya Academy for his anthology of one-act plays titled “Sisu” in 1994 and for his plays Madhyadhanyazhi, Daivathinte Thoppi, Poonaranga, and Raktha Thabala.
