Despite boasting the comedic talents of Rajendra Prasad and Sree Vishnu as a father-son pair, “Gaali Sampath” (meaning “Wind” Sampath) failed to capture audiences in 2021. Directed by Anish R. Krishna with a screenplay by Anil Ravipudi, the Telugu-language survival drama struggled to find its footing, both critically and commercially.
Critics offered mixed reviews, with some praising the performances but citing a predictable plot and stale humor. Ultimately, the film fell short at the box office, leaving even the catchy tunes by Achu Rajamani unable to revive its fortunes.
Sampath, an aspiring actor and Radio Jockey, faces a tragic twist of fate when he loses both his wife and his voice in a rainy day accident. Known as “Gaali Sampath” for his ability to make only blowing noises, he lives years later with his son Suri, a trucker with respiratory issues. Suri falls in love with the village head’s daughter, and to prove himself worthy, he needs 5 lakh rupees. Sampath, determined to support his son, obtains the money by pledging to return it within a week.
The plot thickens as Sampath, aspiring to participate in a competition with an 8 lakh rupee prize, must pay 5 lakh rupees to secure his slot. His friend, secretly in love with the chief’s daughter, manipulates Sampath into disrupting Suri’s marriage plans. Unaware of his son’s feelings, Sampath unwittingly creates chaos and is betrayed by his friend.
In a desperate attempt to secure a better future for his son, Sampath takes the money from the cabinet, hoping to repay Suri after winning the competition. During his performance as a struggling mime unable to feed his child due to poverty, Sampath moves the audience. Simultaneously, his son, feeling betrayed, leaves home.
Depressed and hearing his son’s harsh words, Sampath contemplates suicide. Meanwhile, Suri discovers the truth about his father’s sacrifices and searches for him. Sampath, motivated by his son’s praise, attempts to escape a well where he fell unconscious. As he nears freedom, rain complicates his ascent, but he discovers the unexpected ability to swim to the top.
Despite injuries, Sampath provides medical aid to Suri and passes out from exhaustion. Days later, he wins the competition, repays Suri’s debt, and helps him buy a new truck. Instead of cursing the rain, Sampath, with a newfound appreciation for life, dances and revels in the rain, symbolizing his transformed perspective.
