Theatre“Astram,” released in 2006, is an Indian Telugu-language action crime film directed by Suresh Krishna. The movie features Vishnu Manchu, Anushka Shetty, Jackie Shroff, and Rahul Dev in prominent roles. Notably, it is a Telugu remake of the Hindi film “Sarfarosh.” The film was also dubbed into Hindi under the title “Astra – The Weapon.”
Plot
The narrative kicks off by portraying the illicit activities of gun smuggling, concealed within bags of dried red peppers, orchestrated by nefarious dacoits and criminals across the country. Following the delivery of a shipment, a group blocks a road, attacks a wedding bus, mercilessly killing its occupants, and loots their gold ornaments and valuables. This heinous act prompts the government police department to form a special task force led by ACP Siddharth IPS (Manchu Vishnu) from the Hyderabad Crime Branch. The team sets up a roadblock in Chittoor, apprehends criminals responsible for the massacre, and arrests the local SI.
During interrogation, a lead surfaces back to Hyderabad, but their superior urges them to bring the SI before the news leaks. En route, the SI taunts and bullies Siddharth, leading to his accidental death. In a flashback to four years earlier, Siddharth and Anusha (Anushka Shetty) attend the same dance class, harboring feelings for each other. Siddharth, however, disappears, causing a four-year separation.
In the present, singer Khadar Vali, aka “KV” (Jackie Shroff), returns to the dance/song school. Siddharth realizes he is being followed, and Anusha, not believing Siddharth’s ACP status, nearly compromises a planned arrest. The pursued criminal is stabbed before revealing crucial information.
Another flashback reveals Siddharth’s reasons for his four-year hiatus, involving familial tragedy and his pursuit of IPS. In the present, the task force uses information from the deceased criminal’s phone to track an impending shipment of illegal weapons. Stakeouts ensue, leading to a shootout where Siddharth breaks his leg, and the criminals escape.
Meanwhile, KV, the leader of the smuggling ring, faces pressure from clients due to a seized shipment and missing ammunition. The ring attempts to bribe Siddharth, threatening him if he refuses. Siddharth, rejecting the bribe, fights back and uses facial reconstruction software to identify his attacker. Investigating further, Siddharth traces the origin of illegal weapons to Rameswaram, suspecting KV’s involvement.
Siddharth and the team raid a shipment, interrogate a high-ranking smuggler, Bullet Basha, and uncover evidence pointing to the DGP’s involvement. During a school function, Siddharth’s father identifies the criminal responsible for his son’s death—none other than the current DGP. The team discovers missing weapons and a handkerchief with the initials “PD,” linking the DGP to the crime.
The DGP orchestrates the kidnapping of Siddharth’s nephew for a trade. After saving his nephew, Siddharth discovers KV as the mastermind. The team attempts a perilous operation to intercept the latest shipment. In a dramatic confrontation, Siddharth manipulates KV against the DGP, resulting in the DGP’s demise. Siddharth delivers a passionate speech condemning KV’s actions, leading to KV’s arrest, but KV takes his own life.
In the movie’s conclusion, the team informs Siddharth of a recent bus atrocity similar to the film’s opening, hinting at a new smuggling ring and a fresh leader to pursue.
