TheatreThe title of SS Rajamouli’s lavish, star-studded movie starring Superstar Mahesh Babu has finally been unveiled. Everyone has already been impressed by the project’s scope, ambition, and visual richness after seeing it for the first time. It is named Varanasi.
One of the most demanding movie formats in the world, IMAX, is the only medium for which Varanasi is being made. Fans are ecstatic about this choice since it will let them to see his films on enormous 1.43:1 IMAX screens, which provide the best level of immersion. However, because IMAX demands extraordinary accuracy in every frame, this decision creates a great deal of pressure.
Varanasi is the second Indian movie to be entirely filmed for IMAX. The first is Nitish Tiwari’s Ramayana, which stars Yash, Sai Pallavi, and Ranbir Kapoor. Aiming for a Diwali 2026 release, that production is already on IMAX’s official release schedule. Ramayana will establish the technical standard for Indian IMAX filmmaking because it arrives earlier. Rajamouli will need to meet or surpass that level if it offers an exceptional visual experience. Regarding clarity, scale, lighting, VFX, and composition, IMAX is quite stringent. On these screens, even tiny errors seem amplified.
Varanasi requires both artistic and technological mastery for Rajamouli, who is renowned for his huge images and intense emotions. He is not the only one responsible. To satisfy IMAX specifications, every department engaged in the movie must execute at a very high level.
The glimpse that was made public last night shows great potential, even though the voyage is just getting started. Film enthusiasts around the world are already debating the images, and interest in the initiative is steadily increasing.
Varanasi is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2027, most likely on March 17. Everyone will be observing how Rajamouli propels Indian cinema into the international spotlight as the team advances. There is every reason to think he is ready for this challenge given his track record and dedication to greatness.
