Vijaya Rangaraju

Vijaya Rangaraju, also known as Rajkumar, is a prominent Telugu film actor, renowned for his portrayals of villainous and supporting characters. While predominantly active in Telugu cinema, he has also made notable contributions to Tamil and Malayalam films. Beyond his acting career, Rangaraju is distinguished as a sports enthusiast, particularly in weightlifting and bodybuilding.

His entry into the Telugu film industry occurred with the 1994 film “Bhairava Island,” marking the beginning of his cinematic journey. However, it was his role in the movie “Yagnam” that garnered him significant acclaim. Cast as the antagonist opposite Gopichand, Rangaraju’s performance in “Yagnam” contributed to his recognition in the industry.

In a revealing interview, the actor disclosed that his original name is Uday Rajkumar, and the film industry bestowed upon him the name Vijaya Rangaraju to avoid confusion with other actors sharing his birth name. Rangaraju candidly expressed his views on the prevalence of caste considerations in the film industry, asserting that regardless of talent, caste often determines opportunities. He highlighted the prevailing influence of caste dynamics, particularly during what he referred to as the “Kapu era.”

Rangaraju’s acting career commenced in Madras, where he participated in several stage plays before making his foray into cinema. His debut in the Malayalam film “Vietnam Colony,” where he portrayed the main antagonist opposite Mohanlal, earned him recognition for his compelling performance. The success of the film paved the way for his entry into Telugu cinema with the lead role in “Bhairava Island,” a movie where he adopted the screen name “Vijaya Rangaraju.”

Despite a hiatus of about a year and a half following his initial success, Rangaraju made a significant comeback with the role of Jinnah in the film “Magarayudu,” directed by EVV Satyanarayana. Afterward, he took a break from the industry, spending five years in London, and upon his return, faced a temporary lull in opportunities. However, he eventually resumed his career and delivered impactful performances, notably as the antagonist in the film “Uri.”
