Melanie Thandiwe Newton was born on November 6, 1972, in Westminster, London, to a Zimbabwean mother from a Shona royal family and an English father who worked as a lab technician and artist. Although her family lived in Zambia and returned there shortly after her birth—where her younger brother was later born—she has clarified that she was born in Westminster, despite some sources incorrectly listing Zambia as her birthplace. Her first name, “Thandiwe,” means “beloved” in Nguni languages.
At age three, her family moved back to England and settled in Penzance, Cornwall, where her father managed the family’s antiques business. Newton attended St Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary School, but described feeling out of place as a Black atheist in an all-white Catholic school. She began spelling her name “Thandie” (pronounced TAN-dee) during this time. She trained in dance at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts and later earned a degree in social anthropology from Downing College, Cambridge, in 1995.
Newton’s film debut was in Flirting (1991), filmed in 1989. Credited as Thandie Newton, she continued using that version of her name professionally. She gained early recognition in Interview with the Vampire (1994) and played Sally Hemings in Jefferson in Paris (1995). One of her most prominent early roles was in Beloved (1998), based on the novel by Toni Morrison, where she portrayed the ghost of a murdered enslaved girl. She starred alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) and appeared in It Was an Accident, written by her husband Ol Parker.
From 2003 to 2005, Newton portrayed Kem Likasu, a recurring love interest on ER, returning for the finale in 2009. She also had roles in The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) and Crash (2004), the latter earning her a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress. She played Linda Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) opposite Will Smith and appeared in several comedies including Norbit (2007) and Run Fatboy Run (2007). In W. (2008), she played Condoleezza Rice.
Newton participated in Live Earth in 2007 and appeared in the disaster movie 2012 (2009). In 2011, she gave a TED Talk titled “Embracing otherness, embracing myself,” sharing insights from her multicultural background and acting career. She acted in For Colored Girls (2010) and Good Deeds (2012), and made her West End debut in Death and the Maiden, though her performance received mixed reviews.
She starred in the crime series Rogue starting in 2013 and appeared in The Slap (2015). From 2016 to 2022, Newton received critical acclaim for her role as Maeve Millay in HBO’s Westworld, winning a Primetime Emmy Award and multiple Critics’ Choice Awards, with nominations for the Golden Globe and SAG Awards. Critics praised her emotionally powerful and nuanced performance.
In 2017, she narrated Bill Cosby: Fall of an American Icon and starred as DCI Roz Huntley in Line of Duty, earning a BAFTA TV Award nomination. She played Val in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), becoming the first Black woman with a major non-alien role in the franchise. Though the film underperformed, critics lauded her performance, even as she expressed disappointment over changes to her character’s arc.
In 2021, Newton announced she would return to using her full name, “Thandiwe,” professionally, beginning with the film Reminiscence. In 2022, she starred in God’s Country, premiering at Sundance, and received a Gotham Award nomination for her performance.
Her notable roles include: Beloved in Beloved (1998), Nyah in Mission: Impossible 2 (2000), Christine in Crash (2004), Linda in The Pursuit of Happyness (2006), Stella in RocknRolla (2008), Laura in 2012 (2009), Tangie in For Colored Girls (2010), Maeve in Westworld (2016–2022), Roz in Line of Duty (2017), and Val in Solo (2018). She also voices Mona in the Netflix animated series Big Mouth (2019–2025) and its spin-off Human Resources (2021–2023).
