Tatineni Rama Rao was an Indian filmmaker who lived from 1938 to April 20, 2022. Between 1966 and 2000, he directed 75 feature films in Telugu and Hindi.
Prior to making his directorial debut in 1966 with the Telugu film Navarathri, Rao began his career in the film industry in the late 1950s, working as the assistant director of his cousins T. Prakash Rao and Kotayya Pratyagatma.
Rao was “the man who established the ‘Madras movie,’ or Hindi films funded primarily by southern capital, as a viable commercial option in the all-India market,” according to Encyclopaedia Britannica. T. Ajay Kumar, a prominent film producer, was his son.
