Talat Mahmood, born on February 24, 1924, remains a revered name in the realm of Indian playback singing, particularly celebrated for his mellifluous voice and mastery over ghazals. Recognized as one of the most popular male playback singers in Indian cinema, he significantly contributed to shaping the modern era of ghazal singing during the 1950s and 1960s.
Born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, to Manzoor Mahmood, Talat exhibited a deep inclination toward music from an early age. Despite hailing from a conservative Muslim background that discouraged singing, his passion for music persisted. He underwent classical music training under Pandit S.C.R. Bhat at Marris College of Music, now known as Bhatkhande Music Institute, in Lucknow during the late 1930s.
Talat Mahmood’s musical journey commenced at the young age of 16 in 1939 when he showcased his prowess by rendering ghazals of eminent poets like Daag, Mir, and Jigar on All India Radio, Lucknow. His distinctive voice captured attention, prompting HMV to recognize his talent and offer him his first disc in 1941, featuring memorable tracks like “Sab din ek samaan nahin tha,” “Bun jaoon ga kya se kya main,” and “Iska to kuch dhyan nahin tha.”
