Suresh Oberoi is an Indian actor who has made a significant impact in the Bollywood film industry. He was born on December 17, 1946, in Quetta, British India (now in Pakistan). Oberoi is known for his diverse roles and contributions to both Hindi and regional cinema.
Due to the partition, within a year, his family, consisting of four brothers and sisters, moved to India, and later resettled in the Hyderabad state, where they established a chain of medical stores. Oberoi attended St. George’s Grammar School in Hyderabad and actively participated in sports, excelling in tennis and swimming. He even received the President’s Award as a Boy Scout. Following his father’s passing shortly after he finished high school, Oberoi, along with his brother, continued running their pharmacy chain. He possesses fluency in Pashto, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, English, Telugu, and Tamil.
During his initial years in Mumbai, his prior experience in radio shows and his well-received voice paved the way for him, and his connections with advertising agencies led him to become a model for Charminar cigarettes and Lifebuoy soaps, propelling him into a leading modeling position by the late 1970s. In late 1977, he made his debut in the film “Jeevan Mukt.” Although he took on lead roles in movies like “Ek Baar Phir” in 1980, the film didn’t achieve commercial success. He also participated in the radio program “Mukaddar Ka Sikandar” during this time. Subsequently, he embraced character roles in films like “Kartavya,” “Ek Baar Kaho,” “Surraksha,” and “Khanjar” between 1979 and 1980, which turned out to be commercially successful ventures.
He earned national recognition for his supporting role as Police Inspector Sharma in the 1980 film “Phir Wahi Raat,” directed by Danny Denzongpa and starring Rajesh Khanna, which received both critical acclaim and commercial success. This laid the groundwork for him to frequently portray police inspectors in his subsequent films.
In 1981, he got his chance with “Laawaris,” earning him a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. His impactful performances in small supporting roles followed in films like “Namak Halal,” “Kaamchor,” and “Vidhata.” After these roles, he was offered a lead role in B. R. Chopra’s “Mazdoor,” co-starring with Dilip Kumar. One of his most notable performances as a character actor was in the 1984 film “Awaaz,” directed by Shakti Samanta and starring Rajesh Khanna, where he portrayed Police Inspector Amit Gupta. His role in “Ghar Ek Mandir” earned him a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.
From 1984 onward, he consistently received substantial character roles in films like “Ek Nai Paheli,” “Kanoon Kya Karega,” “Sharabi,” “Aeitbaar,” “Bepanaah,” and “Jawab.” He was awarded the National Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Mirch Masala” in 1985. His performances in various films such as “Palay Khan,” “Dacait,” “Marana Mrudangam” (a Telugu film), “Tezaab,” “Do Qaidi,” “Parinda,” “Mujrim,” “Aaj Ka Arjun,” “Pyar Ka Devta,” “Tiranga,” “Anari,” “Vijaypath,” “Masoom,” “Raja Hindustani,” “Soldier,” “Safari,” “Gadar Ek Prem Katha,” “Lajja,” “Pyar Tune Kya Kiya,” and “23 March 1931 Shaheed” were well-received by the audience.
Following that, he maintained an average of four to five film appearances per year until the early 2000s, ultimately accumulating over 135 films. In the film “Yaadon Ka Mausam” (1990), he recited a few couplets in the song “Dil Mein Phir Aaj Teri.”
In 2004, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party as a primary member. Oberoi also participated in television shows such as “Dhadkan” and “Kashmeer” and hosted the second season of the talk show “Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai,” a show initially popularized by Farooque Shaikh.
