Suhasini Mulay, born on November 20, 1950, is an Indian actress known for her work in Assamese, Bollywood, and Marathi films, as well as television. She has won five National Film Awards.
Suhasini was born into a Marathi-speaking family in Patna, where she spent her early childhood. Her father passed away when she was three years old, and she was raised by her mother, Vijaya Mulay, a noted documentary filmmaker and film historian, who inspired her interest in cinema.Mulay was in a long-term live-in relationship that ended in 1990. On January 16, 2011, she married physicist Prof. Atul Gurtu at Arya Samaj.
In 1965, she was selected as a model for Pears Soap, which led to her being noticed by filmmaker Mrinal Sen, who cast her in “Bhuvan Shome” (1969), a significant film in Indian cinema.
After “Bhuvan Shome,” Mulay pursued higher education in agricultural technology and mass communication at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She returned to India in 1975 and worked as an assistant to Satyajit Ray in the film “Jana Aranya” and later collaborated with Mrinal Sen on “Mrigaya.”
Mulay has since been involved in film production, making over 60 documentaries, for which she has received national awards. After a hiatus, she made a comeback to mainstream Bollywood with Gulzar’s “Hu Tu Tu,” earning a National Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Since then, she has portrayed motherly roles in Bollywood and appeared in television serials like “Jaane Kya Baat Hui.” Additionally, she starred in the film “Peeda,” directed by Hemant Verma, which won the Best Feature Film award at the FOG Film Festival in the USA.
