In 2005, Shoojit Sircar made his feature film debut with Yahaan. In the savagely war-torn Kashmir, Jimmy Sheirgill and Minissha Lamba starred in a romantic war drama. When it was released, the movie did not do well at the box office and received mediocre reviews. As of 2018, his second movie, Shoebite, starring Amitabh Bachchan, has not been released. Due to a copyright legal dispute between Percept Picture Company and UTV Motion Pictures, [needs update]. Due to the failure of Shoe bite, Sircar and Ronnie Lahiri founded their own movie production business, Rising Sun Films, under which they would produce all of his directorial work. The Bengali-language drama film Aparajita Tumi, which was produced by Sircar for the first time, was helmed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury.
Vicky Donor, a critically acclaimed and financially successful romantic comedy, helped Sircar gain notoriety in 2012. It served as Yami Gautam and Ayushmann Khurrana’s Hindi film debut. Against a budget of 15 crore, the movie, which was about sperm donation and infertility in a Bengali-Punjabi family, made 66.32 crores globally. At the 60th National Film Awards, it was named the winner of the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. In his own words, Sircar said he wanted to take “a light-hearted look at the taboo attached to infertility and artificial insemination” with the movie. He spent more than three years researching the subjects of the story before filming started. The movie was remade in Tamil as Dharala and Telugu as Naruda Donoruda (2016).
A year later, he released the political action thriller Madras Cafe, starring John Abraham, Nargis Fakhri, and rising star Raashi Khanna. It earned favorable reviews from critics upon release and is set at the period of Indian intervention in the Sri Lankan civil war and Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination. Contrary to the West, Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN stated that “it is difficult to develop films about real-life historical events in India. Political demands and sensitive groups inevitably cause problems. Therefore, what Madras Café director Shoojit Sircar has done is praiseworthy.
With the release of the biographical historical drama Sardar Udham, featuring Vicky Kaushal in the title role, Sircar’s fame grew in 2021. The movie, which is based on the life of Udham Singh, a Punjabi independence warrior who murdered Michael O’Dwyer in London to avenge the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar, had its direct-to-digital debut over the Dusshera holiday weekend on Amazon Prime Video. While still in college, Shoojit had the idea to make a movie about the life of Udham Singh. He intended to start filming it in the middle of the 1990s, but it took him two long decades to complete his research. Sardar Udham ultimately won considerable praise from critics. “There is a phenomenal level of craft in Sardar Udham, but none of it is employed,” Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV said.Sardar Udham was named the best Bollywood film of the year by various magazines, and it also contains a significant amount of soul
