In 2008 saw the debut of actor Shilpi Marwaha on the Delhi Theatre Circuit. Activist for street theater, she spoke out against the 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder case known as the “Nirbhaya” or “Damini” case during the “anti corruption movement” and the demonstrations at Rastrapati Bhawan.
She also appeared in mainstream films, including Raanjhanaa (directed by Anand L. Rai in 2013), Bhoomiyude Avakashikal (The Inheritors of the Earth), directed by T. V. Chandran in 2013,[4] “Widow of Silence” (Aasiya) in 2018 (directed by Praveen Morchhale[5] in 2018, and “Chhapaak” (directed by Meghna Gulzar in 2020).
She received the First Sarla Birla Award for her contributions to theatre, the AAS Excellence Award 2016 for her involvement in women’s empowerment programmes, the DCW award from the Delhi Commission for Women, and the ‘Devi’ award from Indian Express Group for her work in empowering women with theatre.
Shilpi was raised in Delhi, where she attended Kamla Nehru College, University of Delhi, to study commerce. She took part in campus theater. She performed in numerous stage and street performances at DU.
In 2008, Marwaha began performing in plays with Asmita Theatre Group in Delhi. She trained with theater director Arvind Gaur and took part in his college theater workshop. She oversaw workshop plays and organized theater workshops.
