Seamus McGarvey
Biography:
Seamus McGarvey (born 29 June 1967) is an Irish cinematographer known for his work on films such as Atonement and Anna Karenina, both of which earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography.
McGarvey began his career as a still photographer before studying film at the University of Westminster in London. After graduating in 1988, he worked on short films and documentaries, including Skin (directed by Vincent O’Connell) and Atlantic (directed by Sam Taylor-Wood).
He was the cinematographer for the pilot of the TV series The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, directed by Anthony Minghella. His documentary projects include Lost Angels: Skid Row Is My Home—filmed in the same locations as Wright’s The Soloist—as well as Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction, Rolling Stones: Tip of the Tongue, and The Name of This Film Is Dogme95.
In addition to feature films and television, McGarvey has shot and directed over 100 music videos for artists such as Coldplay, Paul McCartney, Dusty Springfield, The Rolling Stones, U2, and Robbie Williams.
He has been honored with an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Dundee University and an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from the University of Ulster, and is an Honorary Fellow of Edinburgh College of Art. His work and insights are featured in In Conversation with Cinematographers by David A. Ellis and in New Cinematographers by Alexander Ballinger.
McGarvey is married to British filmmaker Lorna Tucker, and the couple resides in Tuscany, Italy.
