Biography:

Shanmugam Saravanan, an Indian cinematographer and film director, is known for his significant contributions to the Indian film industry. He received his education in cinematography from the M.G.R. Government Film and Television Training Institute. His career began with the Tamil romantic film “Poove Unakkaga” in 1996, which featured popular actors Vijay and Sangita. Saravanan’s directorial debut was “Silambattam.” He has particularly strong collaborations with directors Vikraman and Suresh Krissna, having worked as a cinematographer on numerous successful films in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam.

Coming from a background of creativity as the son of poet Ulundurpettai Shanmugham, Saravanan completed his cinematography diploma and gained initial experience by assisting renowned cinematographer P. Selvakumar on Aabavanan’s team. Director Vikraman recognized his talent and offered him the role of cinematographer for “Pudhiya Mannargal,” marking the beginning of a successful partnership. Saravanan’s work in films like “Poove Unakkaga” and “Suryavamsam” further solidified his reputation as a skilled cinematographer. His cinematography played a pivotal role in the commercial success of these films.

In 2008, Saravanan ventured into directing with “Silambattam,” a Tamil action comedy featuring Silambarasan Rajendar in dual roles. The film was well-received and commercially successful, establishing Saravanan as a director to watch. Throughout his career, he has also nurtured and mentored talented cinematographers in the South Indian film industry, including Vijay Milton, R. Madhi, Vetri, and Manoj Paramahamsa.
