Rajan P. Dev began his acting career in Kerala with a number of reputable play troupes. His father is still a big effect on him. He gained notoriety for his roles in several plays performed by the prominent stage actor N. N. Pillai’s company. S. L. Puram Sadanandan chose him to play Kochuvava, the play’s protagonist, in Kattukuthira. The drama was performed in more than 100 locations, and Dev quickly rose to fame throughout Kerala. In 1984 and 1986, he was honored with the Kerala State Theater’s Best Actor Award. Dev began his cinematic career in addition to his famous stage career. Despite his popularity in movies, he continued to often appear in theater productions.
Ente Mamattikkuttiyammakku (1983), directed by Fazil, served as Dev’s debut feature. Thilakan was cast in his smash hit play Kattukuthira when it was adapted into a movie. In a magazine interview, Dev expressed his displeasure about this, which was read by director Thampy Kannanthanam. He asked Dev to play Carlos, the film’s villain, in Indrajaalam (1990), which starred Mohanlal. Carlos, like his persona Kochuvava, rose to fame tremendously. For a while after that, Dev was sometimes referred to as Carlos, much like Keerikkadan Jose, another well-liked evil character of the era.Dev’s career was defined by his performance as Carlos because he was cast as several villains in subsequent movies.
Dev played a number of comedic villain roles, but he was unable to break out of the mold of the standard bad guy. With Aniyan Bava, he was able to take a rest. He played Aniyan Bava, the younger brother of Chetan Bava, played by Narendra Prasad, in the 1995 film Chetan Bava, which was directed by Rajasenan. The movie demonstrated his range of abilities. After that, he went on to play fully developed comedy parts, most notably in the movies Sphadikam (1995), Thommanum Makkalum (2005), and Chota Mumbai (2007). He still performed his distinctive evil parts. He began his career in Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu films, beginning with S. Shankar’s 1993 film Gentleman. In those languages, he appeared in almost 50 movies, the majority of which he played the bad guy.Out of the roughly 800 films he appeared in, many of the parts he played were corrupt officials like ministers or police officers, which is another example of how he was frequently cast in the same kind of roles. Three movies, Achammakuttiyude Achayan (1998), Maniyarakkallan, and Achante Kochumolku (2003), were directed by Dev. Two other movies starring Mammootty and Prithviraj, Kayal Rajavu and Simham, were slated for him to helm.
During his final years, Rajan P. Dev battled diseases such as diabetes and liver cirrhosis. Because of these issues, he was admitted to the hospital several times. He also lost his sight as a result of diabetes and struggled to see the camera during numerous shoots. On July 26, 2009, he vomited large amounts of blood at his residence in Angamaly and was sent to the nearby Little Flower Hospital. He was later transferred to Lake Shore Hospital in Kochi for further care, where he died on July 29, aged 58. Ringtone, directed by Ajmal, was his most recent feature.
