Peter Bradford Benchley
Biography:
Peter Benchley was an American novelist, screenwriter and marine conservationist best known for creating the bestselling novel Jaws, which became one of the most successful and influential films in cinema history. His fascination with sharks and the ocean began during his childhood summers on Nantucket Island, where he enjoyed sailing, fishing and observing marine life. This interest eventually became the inspiration for the story that introduced him to millions of readers.
Before becoming a novelist, Benchley worked as a journalist for The Washington Post and Newsweek. He also served as a speechwriter for President Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1974, he published Jaws, a suspenseful novel about a great white shark threatening a seaside community. The book became an international bestseller and was adapted into the 1975 film directed by Steven Spielberg. Benchley co-wrote the screenplay with Carl Gottlieb and made a brief appearance as a television interviewer in the movie.
He continued writing novels such as The Deep, The Island, Beast and White Shark, several of which were adapted for film and television. During the later part of his life, Benchley became deeply involved in marine conservation. He recognised that Jaws had contributed to public fear of sharks and worked to promote greater understanding and protection of these important ocean animals.
Peter Benchley passed away in February 2006. His literary and cinematic legacy remains closely connected to Jaws, while his later conservation work reflects his lasting love for the ocean.
