Thiagarajan Kumararaja, an Indian film director and screenwriter, gained recognition with his debut film, the critically acclaimed neo-noir gangster movie “Aaranya Kaandam” in 2011. His upbringing in Chennai was somewhat sheltered, as his parents were concerned about him picking up bad habits outside, so he spent much of his time at home. However, his fascination with bus rides and observing bus drivers sparked an early ambition to become a PTC bus driver. Despite initially enrolling in a Visual Communications course at Loyola College in Chennai, he dropped out to pursue his passion for filmmaking. Inspired by composer Ilaiyaraaja’s music, Kumararaja’s journey into films began, leading him to work in various roles such as a freelance copywriter, photographer, and later as a documentary maker for Vijay TV.
Kumararaja’s foray into filmmaking truly commenced with his critically acclaimed short film, “Becky,” winning the first prize at the Ability Fest 2005. This success led to collaborations with directors Pushkar-Gayathri, where he contributed to their films as a dialogue writer and lyricist. His groundbreaking feature film, “Aaranya Kaandam,” faced numerous challenges during its production, including objections from the regional censor board due to its explicit content and violence. However, Kumararaja’s unwavering dedication to presenting his vision to a mature audience led him to approach the Central Tribunal in Delhi, which ultimately cleared the film for release. “Aaranya Kaandam” marked a significant milestone in Tamil cinema, earning Kumararaja the prestigious Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director at the 59th National Film Awards and international acclaim for its distinct style as the first neo-noir film in the Tamil film industry.
Apart from his directorial endeavors, Kumararaja also served as a script consultant for the Tamil film “Yennai Arindhaal” in 2015, collaborating with director Gautham Vasudev Menon, showcasing his versatility and experience in the industry beyond his own directorial projects.
