Paul Walker
Biography:
Paul William Walker IV, born on September 12, 1973, in Glendale, California, was the son of Cheryl (née Crabtree), a fashion model, and Paul William Walker III, a sewer contractor and former amateur boxer who won the Golden Gloves twice. Walker’s paternal grandfather, William, had a brief boxing career under the name “Irish” Billy Walker, and another relative raced factory cars for Ford during the 1960s.
Walker was raised in the Mormon faith and had four younger siblings: Aimee, Ashlie, Caleb, and Cody. He grew up mostly in Sunland, Los Angeles, and graduated from Village Christian School in 1991 before attending several Southern California community colleges, where he studied marine biology.
He began modeling as a toddler, appearing in a Pampers commercial at age two, and later appeared in a Showbiz Pizza ad in 1984. That same year, he started acting on television, including roles in CBS Schoolbreak Special and Highway to Heaven. His first leading TV role came in 1987 as Jeremy Beatty in Throb, followed by guest appearances on Charles in Charge, Who’s the Boss?, and What a Dummy. In 1993, he gained recognition on The Young and the Restless as Brandon Collins alongside Heather Tom, earning Youth in Film Award nominations. Walker’s final television appearance was on Touched by an Angel, and he also appeared with his sister on the game show I’m Telling! in 1988.
Walker’s film career began in 1986 with low-budget features such as Monster in the Closet and The Retaliator. After returning to film in 1994 with Tammy and the T-Rex, he secured his first feature role in Meet the Deedles (1998), which, despite poor reception, led to supporting roles in Pleasantville (1998), Varsity Blues (1999), She’s All That (1999), and The Skulls (2000).
Walker’s breakout role came in 2001 as Brian O’Conner in The Fast and the Furious, co-starring with Vin Diesel, establishing him as a leading man and launching the franchise. He earned the MTV Movie Award for Best On-Screen Team with Diesel in 2002 and starred in the thriller Joy Ride the same year. Though initially cast in S.W.A.T. (2003), he returned to reprise Brian O’Conner in 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003). He acted in other films, including Timeline (2003), Into the Blue (2005), Clint Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers (2006), and Eight Below (2006). Walker also took on producing roles in The Death and Life of Bobby Z (2007), Vehicle 19 (2013), and Pawn Shop Chronicles (2013), and starred in The Lazarus Project (2008).
Walker reprised Brian O’Conner in Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five (2011), and Fast & Furious 6 (2013), earning Teen Choice and MTV Movie Awards for his performances. He also appeared in Takers (2010) and returned to modeling in 2011 for the Cool Water fragrance. In 2012, he founded Laguna Ridge Pictures, signing a first-look deal with Universal Pictures.
Following his death in 2013, three films featuring Walker were released posthumously: Hours (2013), Brick Mansions (2014), and Furious 7 (2015). For Furious 7, he had completed 85% of his scenes before passing; Weta Digital used visual effects, stand-ins, and archival footage to complete his role. He was posthumously honored with awards and nominations for his performance.
Walker was set to appear in The Best of Me (2014) and Hitman: Agent 47 (2015), roles later recast after his death. He reportedly declined the role of Superman in Superman Returns (2006). The Fast & Furious franchise has honored him in subsequent films, including appearances in F9 (2021) and Fast X (2023), and he received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023.
Raised Mormon, Walker later became a non-denominational Christian. He lived in Santa Barbara with his dogs and had a daughter, Meadow Rain Walker, with childhood friend Rebecca Soteros. Vin Diesel is Meadow’s godfather. Walker was also close friends with Tyrese Gibson.
An avid Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner, Walker held a brown belt under Ricardo “Franjinha” Miller and was posthumously awarded a black belt. He co-founded the charity Reach Out Worldwide, delivering aid to disaster-affected regions. Passionate about marine biology, he joined The Billfish Foundation’s board and starred in the National Geographic series Expedition Great White, tagging and studying sharks in Mexico.
Walker was a car enthusiast, racing in the Redline Time Attack series and co-owning a high-end performance shop, Always Evolving. At his death, he owned a 30-car collection, many shared with Roger Rodas.
On November 30, 2013, Walker and Rodas died in a high-speed Porsche Carrera GT crash in Valencia, California, while leaving an event for Walker’s charity. Both men were killed instantly, and the crash was attributed to excessive speed and tire age; alcohol, drugs, road conditions, and mechanical failure were ruled out. The accident occurred at a popular drifting spot.
