Prem was born as Kiran Kumar on October 22, 1976, to Rajappa and Bhagyamma in Maddur, Mandya District, Indian State of Karnataka. Rakshita, a former actress who is now a producer, is his wife; they have a son named Surya.
While enrolled in a pre-university programme, Prem began his career as Sunil Kumar Desai’s assistant director on the 1993 film Nishkarsha. After the movie was over, he went back to his birthplace of Mandya to finish the course before going back to Bangalore. He continued to collaborate as an associate director on Rayara Maga (1994) and Kannamuchchale, Dorai-Bhagavan, and Hello Yama with A. R. Babu. He was given the chance to independently direct his first movie, Kariya (2003), by producer Anekal Balaraju.
Darshan played the title role in the gangster romance movie Kariya. The crowd enjoyed the movie and it received favorable reviews. Prem received praise for using real-life big dons as actors in his film. Numerous others praised the soundtrack and cinematography as well. The mobster Darshan portrayed struggled to communicate his affection. The same year, Prem helmed the levity romantic comedy Excuse Me, starring Ajay Rao, Sunil Rao, and Ramya. Many of the songs from the movie, many of which were written by R. P. Patnaik, became top songs on the charts.
Prem’s biggest box office hit, Jogi, which starred Shivarajkumar, Jennifer Kotwal, and Arundhati Nag in the key parts, was released in 2005. The movie brought in record sums at the box office. The mother-son sentimental storyline was well received, and Shivarajkumar’s [5] biggest comeback picture was regarded as a result.
In 2008, Prem tried his hand at acting in addition to directing the movie Ee Preethi Yeke Bhoomi Melide after three consecutive great hits. Expectations for the movie were high because of the pre-release advertisements, which attracted a lot of media attention. In a special appearance, Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat made her film debut in South Indian productions. The film’s melodic soundtracks were very well-liked.
In 2010, Prem’s next project was the movie Raaj the Showman. Puneeth Rajkumar and Priyanka Kothari starred in it. The film’s cinematography and V. Harikrishna’s soundtrack are what people remember it for most. Despite having the likes of Puneeth Rajkumar and V. Harikrishna, the film only made an average amount of money at the box office.
Prem accepted the main role in Mahesh Babu’s contentious Prem Adda, a controversial remake of the critically acclaimed Tamil film Subramaniapuram with music by V. Harikrishna. This was Prem’s first time acting without himself directing. The movie brought in an average amount at the box office. In 2014, he produced and appeared in the film DK under the banner of his production company Premdreams.
