Paravai Muniyamma was an Indian folk singer and actress who lived from June 25, 1937, until March 29, 2020. Given that she was born in the Madurai village of Paravai, she was given the adjective Paravai. She performed as a playback vocalist in addition to appearing in numerous Tamil films, primarily in supporting parts. Additionally, Muniyamma had a cookery show on Kalaignar TV. In the Tamil cinema industry, she was first introduced by music director Vidyasagar.
In addition to singing at cultural temple events, Muniyamma pursued her singing career by doing almost 2,000 stage performances of folk songs in her 60s. She also sang on behalf of the Lakshman Sruthi in London, Singapore, and Malaysia. She had previously mentioned in a 2004 interview with The Hindu that her international folk-related programs demonstrate how passionate people are about folk art and culture.
During her prime, she was contacted by a number of musical directors, most notably A. R. Rahman, who asked her to sing a song for the 1995 movie Muthu. She declined the request for unspecified reasons. Additionally, she was asked to croon a folk song for the 2003 movie Dhool by music director Vidyasagar, and she accepted the invitation. With the movie Dhool, she made her feature debut as a playback singer. The song “Singam Pola Nadanthu Vaaraan,” which was recorded during a battle scene, was much appreciated by the crowd.
The director eventually gave her a supporting role in the same movie, which also happened to be her 66th film acting role. After that, she made appearances in more than 50 movies, most of them as grandmothers. Due to the song’s and the movie’s success, Muniyamma received more proposals from the film business to sing and perform.
The Tamil cinema industry, which included actors Sivakarthikeyan, Sarathkumar, and Vishal, assisted her following her hospitalization in 2015. Actor Dhanush covered her medical costs after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa assisted her under the MGR welfare scheme by setting up a 6 lakh fixed account in her name.
She was reported to have passed away in November 2019 following a period of severe illness. Notwithstanding her years-long serious illness, she attended the Maayanadhi film premiere in February 2020 at the actor Abi Saravanan’s request. In 2019, the Tamil Nadu government granted her the Kalaimamani.
