Biography:

Pa. Ranjith, a prominent figure in Indian cinema, is an accomplished film director and screenwriter primarily associated with Tamil cinema. Born in Karalapakkam, Avadi, Chennai, he grew up with two brothers, Prabhu and Saravana. His educational journey led him to the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, where he developed a profound interest in cinema. The time spent traveling to and from college became a source of inspiration for his future film ideas.

During his college days, Ranjith immersed himself in the world of cinema by joining the film chamber and attending annual film festivals. It was during this period that he discovered and drew inspiration from influential films like “The Battle of Algiers” (1966), “Gunda” (1998), and “City of God” (2002). These cinematic experiences fundamentally altered his perspective on filmmaking and left a lasting impact on his creative sensibilities.

Ranjith’s journey into the film industry began as an assistant director, starting with Shiva Shanmugam’s “Thagapansamy” (2006). Although he described this early experience as “unmemorable,” it marked the beginning of his foray into the world of cinema. His career took a significant turn when he apprenticed under filmmaker Venkat Prabhu. Initially involved in preparing storyboards for a Malaysian album that Prabhu was working on in 2006, Ranjith gradually earned trust and started working closely with Prabhu during the production of “Chennai 600028” (2007).

In 2012, Ranjith made his directorial debut with the romantic comedy “Attakathi,” which set the stage for his impactful storytelling. However, it was his second directorial venture, the political drama “Madras” (2014), that garnered widespread acclaim and established him as a director to watch. Subsequently, he directed two major films, the gangster-drama “Kabali” (2016) and “Kaala” (2018), both starring the legendary Rajinikanth.

Pa. Ranjith’s cinematic journey is marked by a blend of artistic inspiration, dedication to storytelling, and a commitment to exploring socio-political themes. His films not only entertain but also contribute to the discourse on contemporary issues, making him a notable and influential figure in Tamil cinema.
