Ophelia Lovibond grew up in Shepherd’s Bush, London, in a single-parent household alongside her brother, sister, and several foster children cared for by her mother, who worked as a chartered psychologist at Wormwood Scrubs Prison. She discovered her passion for acting at around age ten. Lovibond attended Latymer Upper School on a scholarship and later graduated from the University of Sussex in 2008 with a degree in English Literature. Reflecting on her education, she told The Independent in 2015 that she never wanted to attend drama school, saying, “The teaching at Latymer was so inspirational I just wanted to keep learning.”
She began her early training at the Young Blood youth theatre group in Hammersmith, an organization that also helped launch the careers of actors such as Imogen Poots, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Carey Mulligan.
Lovibond made her television debut in 2000 at the age of twelve, playing Poppy Wilson in Channel 4’s sitcom The Wilsons. To secure the role, she lied about her age. “I didn’t have any professional training,” she later recalled. “Performing in front of a live audience at that age was like being thrown in at the deep end—but it was the best way to learn.”
She went on to appear in FM (directed by Elliot Hegarty), the period drama Heartbeat, and the BBC satire W1A, in which she portrayed Izzy Gould.
In 2014, Lovibond joined the cast of CBS’s Elementary as Kitty Winter, Sherlock Holmes’s new apprentice. Creator Robert Doherty personally reached out to her agent about the role, and she was offered the part just one day after sending in a self-taped audition. She described her months filming in New York as “straight out of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, with jazz drifting through Washington Square Park.” She was a regular in season three and made additional appearances in later seasons.
Lovibond continued her television success with her role as Lady Alexandra Lindo-Parker in Sky1’s adventure series Hooten & The Lady (2016) and a guest appearance as MI6 agent Emma Davies in Whiskey Cavalier (2019). She also starred as Joyce Prigger in HBO/STARZ’s comedy Minx, and appeared in Inside No. 9’s debut episode, “Sardines.” In 2022, she portrayed Carrie Symonds in the political drama This England.
Her film career began in 2005 with Roman Polanski’s Oliver Twist. She later appeared in Nowhere Boy, 4.3.2.1., London Boulevard, No Strings Attached, and Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Lovibond played Teri in the BFI/BBC adaptation of 8 Minutes Idle and portrayed Carina, The Collector’s enslaved assistant, in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).
She also worked in radio, playing Sam Peakes in the first series of BBC Radio 4’s Lobby Land (2018).
On stage, Lovibond made her professional theatre debut in 2015 in a revival of Lucy Prebble’s The Effect, directed by Daniel Evans. She went on to star as Elizabeth Barry in The Libertine (2016) at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, as Lois in The Stepmother (2017), as Lou in Barney Norris’s Nightfall (2018), and in David Hare’s The Bay at Nice.
Lovibond previously lived with actor Tom Hughes in Hampstead, London. On May 1, 2022, she married actor Henry Pettigrew, whom she met while performing together in The Effect.
