Mathrubootham, born on July 2, 1944, in Tiruchirappalli, India, was a notable figure known for his contributions as an Indian psychiatrist, writer, actor, and director, particularly in the field of sex education. He hailed from an Iyer family and received his early education in Tiruchirappalli. Mathrubootham earned his M.B.B.S. degree from Chennai’s Stanley Medical College in 1966, followed by further studies to obtain a doctorate in psychiatry.
His career began at the Institute of Mental Health in Chennai, where he initially worked as a lecturer and eventually ascended to the position of Professor of Psychiatry. He concurrently held the role of Psychiatry Professor at Kilpauk Medical College. Mathrubootham’s noteworthy achievements included receiving the Dr. Marfatia award from the Indian Psychiatrists Association for his research on alcohol addiction and the Pinnacle award for his multilingual sex education film titled “Puthira Punithama.”
In his later years, Mathrubootham battled health issues, including arthritis and renal diseases. Unfortunately, he passed away on November 18, 2004, succumbing to a cardiac arrest. His contributions in the field of psychiatry and his efforts in sex education left a lasting impact on the medical community and society as a whole.
