Indian actress Muthumani Somasundaran primarily performs in Malayalam movies. In 2006, she made her feature film debut in Sathyan Anthikkad’s Malayalam flick Rasathanthram. The parents of Muthumani, Somasundaran and Shirly Somasundaran, were in Ernakulam, Kerala. She decided to pursue theater productions because they were involved in the industry. She attended the Ernakulam campus of St. Mary’s Convent Girls High School.
She has performed for All India Radio as a young performer. After learning dance, she switched to mono-act. She won the Kerala School Kalolsavam mono-act contests nine times in a row. She graduated from The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (N.U.A.L.S), Kochi, with a graduate degree in law.
Muthumani became a member of the Amateur Theatre Wing and took part in its activities. In the novelette Oru Dalit Yuvathiyude Kadana Katha, written by Mukundan, she portrayed the lead role of Vasundhara. Since she was in school, she had a close relationship with the Kochi theater companies. She went to Greece for the Ancient Greek Theatre Festival while pursuing her Plus Two schooling, representing India as the only team from the Asia-Pacific area under the name “Lokadharmi.”
She portrayed a 35-year-old mother of two in the play, which was based on the Greek heroine Medea. She was awarded best actress at the Orissa Theatre Olympiad for the play Mukkanji. She played the play’s macho female character, Chethu. She finally got the part in Rasathanthram, the Malayalam film directed by Sathyan Anthikkad, thanks to that honor. She also performed as the Mandodari in the drama Lanka Lakshmi.
She played both Rahel and Arundhati Roy in the Malayalam rendition of The God of Small Things. In Madurai Kandam, the final chapter of Silappatikaram, she also portrayed Kannagi. Muthumani graduated from National University of Advanced Legal Studies with a Bachelor of Laws degree. She registered as an advocate in Kerala High Court, Ernakulam, following her graduation from law school.
Prerana, a life-skill training facility that “offers need-based training for students, teachers, and corporates,” is the focus of her current attention. She is wed to Arun P. R., a screenwriter and director who oversaw the Malayalam Movie Finals in 2019.
