Mohammed Aziz, born as Sayeed Mohammed Aziz-Un-Nabi on July 2, 1954, and fondly known as Munna, was a prolific Indian playback singer celebrated for his contributions to Bollywood, Odia films, and Bengali cinema. His musical journey included approximately twenty thousand songs, spanning diverse genres and languages, making him a versatile artist.
Aziz made his initial mark in the Odia film industry with “Jaga Hatare Pagha,” where he sang the song “Rupa Sagadi re Suna Kaniya.” Subsequently, he became synonymous with Odia films and collaborated extensively with Ollywood actor Siddhanta Mahapatra. His foray into Hindi cinema happened with the film “Ambar” in 1984, where two of his prominent songs, including “Mard Tangewala,” composed by Anu Malik, gained widespread recognition.
Known for his soulful renditions, Mohammed Aziz sang numerous duets with iconic singers such as Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, K.S. Chithra, and others. His notable songs, including “Main Deewana Na Jana Kab,” “Tune Bechain Itna Jyaada Kiya,” “Main Teri Mohabbat Mein Pagal Ho Jaaunga,” “Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka,” and “Aap Ke Aa Jane Se,” continue to be celebrated in the realm of playback singing.
Originally a restaurant singer, Aziz ventured to Mumbai around 1984, where he was introduced to Hindi cinema by Anu Malik. Throughout his career, he collaborated with renowned music directors and received accolades, including two uncertain awards for Best Playback Singer. His final film was “Kaafila,” preceding which he lent his voice to the film “Karan Arjun.”
