Adam Michael Goldstein
Biography:
Adam Michael Goldstein was born on March 30, 1973, in Philadelphia to Andrea and Herbert, both Jewish. Unable to conceive naturally, they had adopted a daughter, Lara, before Adam’s birth. During her pregnancy, Andrea discovered Herbert’s infidelity again and revealed that he was not Adam’s biological father. Goldstein later said his father verbally abused him, likely because of resentment, and openly used drugs in front of him. By age 10, Adam was obese from overeating to cope with anger and depression, and he started drinking alcohol at 11.
At the 1984 Grammys, he saw Herbie Hancock perform with Grand Mixer DXT, which inspired him to become a DJ. He attended Friends’ Central School, but when his father was jailed for bank fraud, his mother moved the family to Los Angeles. By 16, Goldstein was struggling with drugs and entered rehab, where he suffered abuse. While there, he learned Herbert was not his biological father, that he was gay, and dying of AIDS. Goldstein reacted violently and was eventually expelled. Herbert died the following year.
Goldstein fell deeper into drugs, using crack cocaine by age 20 and spending years addicted. In 1997, he attempted suicide when a gun jammed in his mouth. A friend encouraged him to get sober, and through Alcoholics Anonymous, he began his recovery, though he relapsed before recommitting to sobriety. He later became a sponsor for others.
Performing under the name DJ AM, he started deejaying small clubs and landed his first paid gig at 21. He joined the band Crazy Town in 1999, contributing to their hit “Butterfly,” but left in 2001 to escape the group’s dysfunction. In 2003, weighing over 300 pounds, he underwent gastric bypass surgery and lost significant weight. His high-profile relationship with Nicole Richie further boosted his career, leading to television appearances and top-paying residencies in Las Vegas. By 2007, he was making up to $25,000 per show and worked with major artists and celebrities.
In 2008, he formed TRV$DJAM with Travis Barker, performing at the MTV VMAs. Days later, the pair survived a deadly plane crash, leaving Goldstein with severe burns. He sued the plane’s operators and later resumed performing, including a cameo in Iron Man 2 and involvement in the video game DJ Hero. He also hosted MTV’s Gone Too Far, a drug intervention series.
Despite nine years of sobriety, Goldstein admitted he constantly battled temptation. After the crash, prescriptions for painkillers and anti-anxiety drugs contributed to his relapse. During Gone Too Far, he struggled with being around drugs, at times leaving sets to avoid using.
In August 2009, his behavior became erratic, and though he promised to seek treatment, he was found dead in his New York apartment on August 28 from a drug overdose involving cocaine, prescription drugs, and other substances. He was buried in Los Angeles on September 2, with a memorial the next day attended by many friends and celebrities.
MTV went ahead with airing Gone Too Far posthumously, believing it could inspire others to seek help. Iron Man 2 was dedicated to him, honoring his impact and legacy.
