Madsen started his career at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, where he worked under John Malkovich as an apprentice and participated in an Of Mice and Men production.
He had a small part in the science fiction movie WarGames, which was his first noteworthy film role. Madsen portrayed the brutal criminal “Mr. Blonde” in Quentin Tarantino’s feature film debut, Reservoir Dogs. Since “Mr. Pink” had more scenes with Harvey Keitel, Madsen requested that Steve Buscemi play the part. John Travolta was cast in the Vincent Vega role for Pulp Fiction after Madsen turned it down. Donnie Brasco, a criminal film, starred Madsen.
Regarding these movies, he once remarked, “I’m only in a few of them for ten minutes, but they bought my name and my face to put on the DVD box with a gun.” People sometimes forget that I created a specific way of life for my family during the Species, Mulholland Falls, and The Getaway eras. I had no intention of putting my six children in a trailer park. I had to buy groceries and fill up the car with gas, so when people offered me work, it wasn’t always the best.
In Kill Bill: Volume 2, Madsen portrayed the assassin Budd, Bill’s (David Carradine) brother. In 2004, Tarantino talked about a movie that would bring Madsen and Travolta together as The Vega Brothers. Due to the actors’ ages and the on-screen deaths of both characters, Tarantino claimed in 2007 that the movie, which he had originally planned to call Double V Vega, was “kind of unlikely now.”
Madsen starred in BloodRayne, a movie directed by Uwe Boll that he called “a horrifying and absurd film.” For his role in Strength and Honour, he was awarded Best Actor at both the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival and the Boston Film Festival.
In the mockumentary Being Michael Madsen, he portrayed himself. Madsen co-starred on the Crackle web series Coma.
In the eighth season of 24 he portrayed Jim Ricker, an old friend of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). In the comedy Let the Game Begin, Madsen starred. He moved into the Celebrity Big Brother house on January 5, 2012, and placed fourth in the finale.
He portrayed Las Vegas casino magnate Ted Binion in Josh Evans’s film Death in the Desert, which was released in February 2014. John Steppling wrote the screenplay, which was based on crime writer Cathy Scott’s book Death in the Desert.
He starred in the music video for “Black Widow,” a song by Iggy Azalea featuring Rita Ora, which had a Kill Bill theme in August 2014.
Madsen starred in the ensemble western film The Hateful Eight. He was among a number of people rumored to have leaked the film’s script before it was released, causing Tarantino to almost not make the film and eventually rewrite it.
It was later revealed Madsen was not responsible for leaking the script. In 2016, he played a dramatized role of former Texas Ranger Phil Ryan in Real Detective on the Investigation Discovery network. He starred in Vilan Trub’s crime drama film The Dirty Kind, which is loosely inspired by Anthony Weiner
