Realizing his true passion lay behind the camera, Mahesh Muthuswami pursued formal education at the renowned Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). Under the mentorship of veteran cinematographer P.C. Sreeram, he started his career with the Telugu film ‘Kushi’ and the Tamil film ‘Vaanam Vasappadum.’ His early experiences under Sreeram’s guidance laid the foundation for his subsequent achievements.
In 2001, Mahesh’s short film ‘Chaitra,’ directed by Kranti Kanade, earned an Oscar nomination as the official Indian student entry film, showcasing his early prowess in cinematography. His debut feature film, ‘Rightaa Thappaa,’ released in 2005, went on to secure two Tamil Nadu state film awards, marking the beginning of a successful career.
Venturing into Hindi cinema, Mahesh lensed the 2007 film ‘Risk,’ starring Randeep Hooda, Vinod Khanna, and Tanushree Dutta. His diverse portfolio also includes the 2009 cinematography for the 3D animated film ‘Alibaba & 41 Thieves,’ produced by UTV Motion Pictures. The year 2013 saw his Telugu debut with ‘Jabardasth,’ directed by Nandini Reddy, further expanding his footprint in the Indian film industry.
Throughout his career, Mahesh Muthuswami has garnered recognition and accolades for his exceptional contributions. Notable honors include the Best Cinematography award from the Tamil magazine ‘Ananda Vikatan’ for the 2010 film ‘Nandalala’ and the Jagdish Batra Memorial Scholarship from FTII in 2004. Additionally, he received the Phalke Memorial Honour from FTII in the same year, solidifying his status as a respected figure in cinematography.
