Kayla Ewell
Biography:
Kayla Ewell (born August 27, 1985) is an American actress best known for her television roles as Caitlin Ramirez on CBS’s long-running soap The Bold and the Beautiful, Maureen Sampson on NBC’s Freaks and Geeks, and Vicki Donovan on The CW’s The Vampire Diaries.
Ewell was born in Long Beach, California, and raised in Seal Beach. She trained in dance, singing, and acting at the Orange County Song & Dance Company in Westminster. Around 1999, while attending an acting class, she was noticed by a talent agent who encouraged her to audition professionally.
Her television debut came in 2000 with a guest appearance on Freaks and Geeks, where she played Maureen Sampson in the episode “Carded and Discarded,” directed by Judd Apatow. From 2004 to 2005, she appeared on The Bold and the Beautiful and later guest starred on several series, including The O.C., Boston Public, Veronica Mars, Close to Home, and Entourage. In 2006, she appeared in the films Just My Luck and Material Girls, and also took on a leading role in Senior Skip Day.
In 2009, Ewell co-starred in the first seven episodes of The Vampire Diaries as Vicki Donovan, a rebellious and troubled high school student. She became the show’s first human character to be turned into a vampire and was later killed off when her character was staked to protect Elena. Although initially written out, Ewell reprised the role multiple times in later seasons as a ghost and made appearances in key episodes, including the season two finale, the beginning of season three, and the series finale, where her character briefly returns as part of the final storyline.
Ewell went on to play a children’s clothing designer in the 2011 Hallmark Channel movie Keeping Up With the Randalls and appeared the same year on A&E’s The Glades. In 2012, she guest starred on Franklin & Bash as a Navy sailor facing court-martial. She later starred in the Hallmark film Shuffelton’s Barbershop (2013) as Norma, a country singer and songwriter. Additional film work includes the horror movie The Demented (2013), the Lifetime thriller Deadly Daycare (2014), and the romantic drama 2 Years of Love (originally titled 2 Years and 8 Days), released in 2017.
In 2019, Ewell portrayed Nora Truman on The CW series Roswell, New Mexico, and in 2020 she guest starred on Batwoman as the DC Comics villain Nocturna.
Ewell has lived in Los Angeles since 2009. Outside of acting, she enjoys painting, dancing, rock climbing, rappelling, whitewater rafting, and surfing, and she was a member of her high school’s surfing team.
She became engaged to actor and model Tanner Novlan in May 2015, and the couple married in September of that year. In July 2019, they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Poppy, followed by the birth of their son, Jones, in June 2022.
