Kasthuri Shankar

Biography:

Kasthuri Shankar is an Indian actress, model and television presenter who has appeared in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada language films

She was given the name Shanmathi, a combination of her parents’ names, when she was born to lawyers Sumathi Shankar and P.S. Shankar. One of her younger brothers attended IIT to study computer science before completing his post-graduate work there. In 2000, she wed Indian-American cardiothoracic surgeon Sreekumar Subramanian. He worked as a surgeon in the US Air Force before moving to Nashville, Tennessee, where he now works. The son and daughter of the couple are their only children. Her daughter overcame leukemia.

The year Kasthuri graduated from Ethiraj College for Women, she was crowned Miss Chennai. She also took home the title of Femina Miss Madras in the same year. She began her modeling career while still a college student since she was interested in the industry.

She was not just a successful model but also a contestant in the BBC’s Mastermind India 2000 game show. In 1991, she made her acting debut in the movie Aatha Un Koyilile. She began by working on low-budget Tamil movies before moving on to more major films with giants like Kamal Haasan in Indian (1996).

As a celebration of her accomplishments in the film industry, Kasthuri: A South Indian Film Star, a 30-minute documentary, was released. She gained attention for her acting skills in Annamayya (1997) and dance performance in Kaadhal Kavithai (1998).
