K. Shankar (17 March 1926 – 5 March 2006) was an Indian film editor, screenwriter, and director. He helmed over 80 films in various South Indian languages such as Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada, as well as in Hindi.
Shankar’s journey in the film industry commenced as an editing assistant at Central Studios, Coimbatore, in 1939, and he later transitioned to Pakshiraja Studios. His career prospered at AVM Studios, where he gained recognition as an accomplished editor before venturing into film direction. Notably, his directorial achievement “Alaya Mani” (1962) starring Sivaji Ganesan emerged as the top-grossing film of that year. Shankar proceeded to direct seven films featuring Sivaji Ganesan and delivered hits like “Rajkumar” (1964) and “Sachaai” (1969), featuring Shammi Kapoor and Sadhana in leading roles.
In addition, Shankar played a crucial role in shaping the cinematic persona of M. G. Ramachandran (MGR). He directed eight movies starring MGR, and MGR even chose Shankar to direct his own production, “Adimai Penn.”
