John C. Reilly was born in Chicago, Illinois, as the fifth of six children. His father, of Irish and Scottish descent, owned an industrial linen supply company, while his mother was of Lithuanian heritage. Growing up in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, Reilly described himself as a mischievous child, once recalling how he and his friends stole 500 boxes of Sugar Corn Pops from a train at age 12. Raised Catholic, he attended Brother Rice High School and later graduated from The Theatre School at DePaul University.
Reilly’s film career began with a small role in Brian De Palma’s Casualties of War (1989), which expanded after De Palma was impressed by his performance. He followed this with supporting roles in Days of Thunder (1990), State of Grace (1990), Hoffa (1992), and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993). In The River Wild (1994), he played a criminal opposite Kevin Bacon, and in Dolores Claiborne (1995) and Georgia (1995), he showcased his dramatic range.
He gained further recognition through collaborations with director Paul Thomas Anderson, appearing in Hard Eight (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), and Magnolia (1999). During the late 1990s, he also appeared in The Thin Red Line (1998) and Never Been Kissed (1999). Reilly’s early 2000s roles included The Perfect Storm (2000), The Good Girl (2002), and three Best Picture Oscar nominees of that year — Chicago, Gangs of New York, and The Hours. His performance as Amos Hart in Chicago earned him Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.
Reilly continued to build a diverse portfolio with roles in The Aviator (2004), Criminal (2004), and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006). Around this time, he began appearing as Dr. Steve Brule on Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, later spinning the character into his own series Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule (2010–2016). He also starred in the parody Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007), earning two Golden Globe nominations, and reunited with Will Ferrell in Step Brothers (2008).
From 2009 to 2011, Reilly appeared in films such as Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, Cyrus, Cedar Rapids, and We Need to Talk About Kevin, the latter earning him critical praise. He also appeared in Carnage (2011), a dark comedy directed by Roman Polanski.
In 2012, Reilly voiced the title character in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, contributing to the script and helping the film gross over $471 million worldwide. He reprised the role in Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) and Once Upon a Studio (2023). His later credits include Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), The Lobster (2015), Kong: Skull Island (2017), and Sing (2016). Critics particularly praised his comedic and emotional depth in Kong: Skull Island.
In 2018, Reilly portrayed Oliver Hardy opposite Steve Coogan in Stan & Ollie and starred in The Sisters Brothers alongside Joaquin Phoenix, also serving as a producer. That same year, he reunited with Ferrell for Holmes & Watson. He later appeared in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza (2021) in a cameo as Fred Gwynne.
Outside of film, Reilly is an accomplished stage actor. He was nominated for a Tony Award for True West (2000), alternating lead roles with Philip Seymour Hoffman. His stage work also includes A Streetcar Named Desire (2005) and Marty (2002). In 2012, he performed in Dustin Lance Black’s play 8, supporting same-sex marriage rights.
Reilly is widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, known for seamlessly balancing dramatic and comedic roles across film, television, and stage.
