Shoba Chandrasekhar

Biography:

Shoba Chandrasekhar is an accomplished Indian playback singer, film director, writer, and producer, renowned for her contributions to the entertainment industry. She was born on August 24, 1956, and is notably the mother of popular Tamil actor Vijay.

In her early years, Shoba received her musical training under the guidance of Shri Meenakshi Sundaram. She furthered her musical education at the Tamil Nadu Government Music College, studying under esteemed tutors like Vidwan Shri T.M. Thiagarajan. Additionally, she had the opportunity to learn Veena playing from Smt. Kalpakam Swaminathan at the music college. In recent years, Shoba has been honing her skills in vocal Carnatic music under the tutelage of Smt. Brinda Thiagarajan, the daughter of Shri Maharajapuram Santhanam.

Shoba Chandrasekhar has received recognition for her philanthropic endeavors and her role as a devoted mother and wife. She was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Mrs. Chennai award by Esthel Hotels and Resorts. Moreover, she was appointed as the Artistic Heritage Consultant by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha.

Throughout her multifaceted career, Shoba transitioned from being a singer in light music troupes to lending her voice to films. She made her debut as a playback singer with the song “Maharaja Oru Maharani…” from the film “Iru Malargal.” Besides her musical contributions, she has written numerous stories that were adapted into films, many of which were directed by her husband, S. A. Chandrasekhar. Shoba herself ventured into film production and direction, with two films to her credit, “Nanbargal” and “Innisai Mazhai.” She has also showcased her musical talents through classical concerts and released a devotional album titled “Anaimuganum Arumuganum.”

In her personal life, Shoba is married to film director S. A. Chandrasekhar since April 26, 1973. Their son, Vijay, has become a beloved figure in Tamil cinema. Unfortunately, they experienced the tragic loss of their daughter, Vidya, at the tender age of 2. Shoba’s brother, S. N. Surendar, is also a well-known playback singer and voice actor, further emphasizing her family’s deep-rooted connections to the world of entertainment.
